As a member of the Community of Practice (CoP) for Women’s Empowerment, Youth Help Sierra Leone is pleased to contribute to the UN Women Empower Salone Project, implemented in collaboration with Media Matters for Women and supported by Irish Aid in Bombali District.

The initiative brings together development partners, community leaders, media houses and civil society organizations to strengthen women’s voices, expand access to vital information and advance gender equality at the community level.

We remain committed to ensuring that women and girls particularly those in underserved communities are informed, heard and meaningfully involved in decisions affecting their lives. Through collective action, responsible media engagement and strong community partnerships, we can create a safer and more inclusive Sierra Leone where every woman and girl has the opportunity to lead and thrive.

A POWERFUL SESSION IN KOIDU, KONO DISTRICT

I had a meaningful and inspiring session with the Girls Empowerment Network Sierra Leone, where we discussed the serious challenges affecting women and girls in our communities including gender-based violence, discrimination, teenage pregnancy, limited educational opportunities and economic exclusion.

As young people, we cannot continue waiting for the Government or donor partners to solve every problem. While their support remains important, lasting change must also begin with us. We must speak out, mobilise our communities, protect vulnerable girls and create opportunities that allow women and girls to learn, lead and thrive.

As Founder and Executive Director of Youth Help Sierra Leone, I believe youth-led action is essential to building a fairer and more inclusive Sierra Leone. When young people take responsibility and work together, even small community actions can grow into powerful movements for change.

My sincere appreciation goes to Professor Lamin Sheriff, Founder of Girls Empowerment Network Sierra Leone, and his entire team for the warm reception, productive engagement and shared commitment to empowering women and girls.

The time for action is now. Let us stop waiting for change and become the generation that creates it.
