The Chief's Diary: Literally Shaping a Generation of Leaders- From School Policy to the University Lecture Room
Today was surreal.
I've been teaching at the university now for about 6 years and today in my class were students who took high school transition exams shaped by my policies as Minister of Education.
It was 2020 at the peak of COVID-19. I remember bringing a decision to cabinet to allow students to go back to school and take exams in 2020. The world was under lockdown and parents were bashing me for making a decision they thought would put their children at risk. I decided that the data said otherwise and together with the Ministry of Health, we decided to a motion. President Bio and the government approved. We supported learners with extra support, more learning materials and more.
We reopened school for students in the final year of high school and scheduled their transition exams (some other ECOWAS countries didn't schedule WASSCE for another year).
Today, in my class for 5th year Honors 2 engineering students were learners who benefitted from that policy decision. And in my class, they are now learning about innovation and entrepreneurship- problem solving skills that will literally shape their lives.
For me, this is what drives me. Impact. Shaping the lives of Sierra Leoneans directly through policy and through action.
