We are honoured to have received this congratulatory message from Arik Karani, President of the Africa Public Relations Association, on the establishment of the Sierra Leone Association of Communication and Public Relations Professionals.

This recognition is both encouraging and affirming as we begin the journey of strengthening and advancing the communications and public relations profession in Sierra Leone.

At SLACPRP, we believe that great public relations is built on meaningful relationships, shared values, continuous learning, and the strength of a collective voice. These principles closely align with APRA’s vision of promoting excellence and collaboration across the continent.

We are particularly inspired by the words of President Arik Karani:

“Once we learn, we can grow, and once we grow, we can become powerful — and we can do it together.”

At the University of Makeni’s Mass Communication Department dinner event, Interim President Sallieu Sesay stood as guest speaker before students, guests, and dignitaries, offering a thoughtful and honest reflection on “The Role of the Media in Bridging the Political Divide for the Crucial 2028 Electoral Cycle.”

“Every press release a PR professional drafts during this cycle, every campaign script a strategist writes, every social media post an institutional communicator approves, contributes to the discourse our country will inhabit on polling day. We can poison the well or we can keep it clean. The choice is ours, and it is a daily choice.
This is why the SLACPRP exists. It is why we are working to put in place a Code of Conduct for communication professionals during electoral cycles — a code that commits its signatories to factual accuracy, to refusing assignments that require the dissemination of hate or disinformation, and to a standard of professional behaviour that holds whether one is paid by a political party, a ministry, a development partner, or a private client. A profession that cannot police itself will be policed by others, often poorly. We intend to police ourselves.
