The way we define the role influences the value we give the role.

If a communications professional is primarily seen as: “the person who posts on Facebook,” the organisation may naturally involve them after a decision has already been made.

If they are seen as:
“the person who takes pictures,” their contribution can become almost entirely event-based.

If they are seen primarily as:
“the person who handles the media when the organisation is in crisis,” their role can become largely reactive.

And if they are seen as:
“the person who helps us think about how we communicate with the people who matter to our organisation,” their involvement potentially begins much earlier.

Yesterday, we converged for our general meeting to discuss key issues, share updates, and, importantly, create space to connect and engage as SLACPRP colleagues.

SLACPRP Engages SLAJ on Strategic Partnership and Professional Media Engagement

SLACPRP, led by Interim President Sallieu Sesay, has met with the Executive of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) to promote and strengthen professional and ethical collaboration between communications practitioners and journalists in Sierra Leone.

Communications, public relations, and journalism, though distinct professions, remain on the same line of public trust and the flow of information to society. SLACPRP believes that both professions have more opportunities to collaborate. We also believe that communications and PR professionals should support journalism, not seek to control it.

The meeting, grounded in a shared understanding of the importance of both professions, further strengthened the broader and more strategic relationship between SLAJ and SLACPRP.
During the engagement, the Interim President Sallieu, outlined key areas of focus, including joint training for journalists on specialised communications and PR-related areas to strengthen their capacity to report on public, private, and multinational organisations.

The two organisations also agreed on the need to establish ethical frameworks in areas where communications, PR, and journalism intersect. These frameworks would promote a healthy and professional working relationship between communications practitioners and journalists, particularly in areas such as advertorial placement across radio, television, newspapers, and online media.

The meeting also explored how SLACPRP could serve as a reliable resource mobilisation partner to SLAJ, given the diverse range of sectors represented within its membership.

In his response, SLAJ President, Alhaji Manika Kamara welcomed SLACPRP as a strategic partner and conveyed warm greetings to the Association’s national membership.

Recognising the distinct roles of the two professional bodies, SLAJ acknowledged SLACPRP’s autonomy as a professional body and strategic partner.

SLAJ also offered an open-door policy to SLACPRP in fostering ethical guidelines and professional practices in areas where communications professionals and journalists meet.

SLACPRP looks forward to this partnership and the great things that both Associations will achieve together.
