Join ME4CJ’s Co-Founder and Executive Coordinator – Legal, Guru Raschid (Mucktarr Raschid Esq.), live on Focus Salone (Amaze TV) this Thursday, 14th May, from 8:00–9:30 AM.

This important discussion will reflect on Sierra Leone’s 2026 Universal Periodic Review (UPR) before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, where Mother Earth for Climate Justice (ME4CJ) participated and presented recommendations on civic space protection, environmental justice, natural resource governance, and human rights accountability.

The conversation will provide insights into ME4CJ’s experience at this year’s UPR, the key recommendations presented during Sierra Leone’s session, and why these issues remain critical for communities across the country.

The programme will also highlight ME4CJ’s expanding work on climate justice and community empowerment, including updates on:

🔹 Our Flexible Support Mechanism (FSM) project
🔹 Global Greengrants-supported initiatives
🔹 West Africa Climate Legal Defence work
🔹 Key projects and community interventions implemented over the past year

This is an opportunity to engage with ME4CJ’s ongoing efforts to advance environmental justice, strengthen civic freedoms, and promote sustainable development in Sierra Leone and across West Africa.

African Women’s Month / International Women’s Day Message – Environmental Justice

The liberation of women is not an act of charity but a prerequisite for the total emancipation of oppressed people and a precondition for the African revolution, as powerfully emphasized by Thomas Sankara.

Across Africa, women stand at the frontline of struggles for land, water, food security, and environmental protection. From rural farming communities to urban grassroots movements, African women are often the first to experience the devastating effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and extractive industries. Yet they remain among the most powerful agents of change.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day and African Women’s Month, we must recognize that the fight for gender equality is inseparable from the struggle for environmental justice. When women have access to land rights, decision-making power, education, and climate resources, communities become more resilient and sustainable.

For organizations like Mother Earth for Climate Justice (ME4CJ), empowering women is central to building a just climate future. Women’s leadership in environmental governance, climate advocacy, and community resilience is essential for protecting ecosystems and securing the rights and livelihoods of present and future generations.

The path to climate justice in Africa must therefore include the empowerment, protection, and leadership of women. A sustainable future cannot be achieved while half of society remains marginalized.

When women rise, communities rise—and when communities rise, the environment stands a better chance of survival.

Mother Earth for Climate Justice at the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) – Geneva 🇺🇳🇸🇱

Over the past few weeks, the Mother Earth for Climate Justice (ME4CJ) team worked intensively to prepare for Sierra Leone’s review at the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva.

We were honoured to be invited to participate, and our Co-Founder and Executive Coordinator – Legal Guru Raschid represented ME4CJ during Sierra Leone’s session, where he presented our recommendations before the international community.

At this UPR cycle, ME4CJ focused on three core priority areas:

🔹 Protection of Civic Space and Fundamental Freedoms
We called for reforms to strengthen freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and protection of human rights defenders.

🔹 Natural Resource Governance and Corporate Accountability
We raised concerns about environmental harm, displacement in mining communities, and the need for greater transparency and accountability in extractive industries.

🔹 Climate Justice and Environmental Protection
We emphasised that environmental degradation, plastic pollution, and climate vulnerability are not only environmental issues — they are human rights issues.

The UPR process is an important mechanism for accountability, but real change depends on implementation at home.

We remain committed to working with communities, partners, and institutions to ensure that human rights, environmental justice, and civic freedoms are protected in Sierra Leone.

The work continues.

📣 Partnership in Action | Mental Health Awareness Walk

Over the weekend, our Co-Founder and Executive Coordinator (Legal), Guru Raschid (Mucktarr Raschid), proudly joined the Center for Gender and Social Justice in their impactful Mental Health Awareness Raising Walk.

The walk, themed “Breaking the Silence: Promoting Mental Wellbeing, Ending Gender-Based Violence”, brought together community members, health professionals, and advocates to shed light on the links between mental health and GBV — and to stand in solidarity with survivors.

We are honoured to support this initiative as part of our ongoing partnership with CGSJ under our MoU, and we remain committed to fostering inclusive, healthy, and just communities.

🟣 Let’s keep raising awareness and cutting the stigma — together.

Advancing Environmental Justice in Sierra Leone

Over the past few months, Mother Earth for Climate Justice (ME4CJ) has led a two-part transformative initiative, proudly funded by the NORAD Civic Space Grant and supported by CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. This project has made meaningful impact by both empowering grassroots environmental defenders and fostering inclusive, strategic dialogue across sectors.

1. Legal Empowerment Training Workshop
• We offered capacity-building sessions to grassroots activists and environmental defenders, introducing them to environmental rights and connecting them with our Mother Earth Pro Bono Lawyers Network—a vital resource for accessing legal support and defending environmental justice.

2. Sectoral Stakeholder Dialogue
• Leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector convened to unpack environmental justice challenges—from land degradation and air pollution to threats against defenders—and collaborate on actionable solutions to protect civic space and foster sustainable governance.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone—participants, facilitators, and supporters—who contributed to these efforts.
