💪👩🏽‍🎓 SDG 5: Gender Equality

When we empower women and girls, we empower nations. 🌍✨

From classrooms to boardrooms, from farms to tech hubs, women are breaking barriers every day. But inequalities still exist — in access to education, leadership, and opportunities.

At SI4SDGs, we believe gender equality is not just a goal, it’s the foundation for a fairer, more sustainable Sierra Leone.

💬 Question for today: Who is a woman that inspires you, and why?

Education is the foundation of sustainable development. Every young person deserves the chance to learn, grow, and innovate. 💡

In Sierra Leone, students face challenges like limited resources, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate technology. But together, we can change that! 🙌

At SI4SDGs, we are committed to promoting initiatives that:
✅ Improve learning spaces with modern tools
✅ Encourage digital literacy and innovation
✅ Empower students to think critically about global issues

💬 Question for you today: If you had the power to improve one thing in Sierra Leone’s education system, what would it be?

SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Did you know that in Sierra Leone, agriculture employs over 60% of the population, yet food insecurity still affects thousands of families? 🤔

This is why Zero Hunger is one of the most important Sustainable Development Goals. Ending hunger isn’t just about food — it’s about:
✅ Supporting farmers with modern tools and training
✅ Reducing food waste
✅ Encouraging young people to get involved in agriculture
✅ Promoting nutrition and healthy eating

At SI4SDGs, we believe that every student has a role to play in achieving food security in Sierra Leone. 🌱✨

💬 Share with us: What innovative idea do you think could help end hunger in our communities?

🌿 Hike for Nature – Our Unforgettable Day at TACUGAMA Chimpanzee Sanctuary 🐒🌊

This past weekend, the Students Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals (SI4SDGs) embarked on a truly unforgettable hike at the world-renowned Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary – and what an incredible experience it was! From breathtaking scenery to eye-opening environmental realities, the day left us inspired, concerned, and determined to take action.

Our first stop was the construction site of the long-awaited Canopy Walk, a visionary project funded by UNDP. This innovation will allow visitors to walk comfortably through the forest canopy, offering a unique perspective of the sanctuary while boosting eco-tourism. We couldn’t help but imagine the thrill future visitors will feel, suspended above the lush greenery with the sounds of nature all around.

From there, we visited the second-largest Guma Valley Dam, a critical source of water for Regent, Bathurst, and surrounding communities. It was a sobering reminder of how vital water security is to our survival. To safeguard this precious resource, we are calling on the government to:
• Increase the dam’s bank capacity to ensure sufficient reserves during the dry season.
• Immediately halt deforestation in the surrounding catchment area. Nature is not a luxury – it is a necessity.

Our journey then took us to the Innovative Center under construction, where Tacugama’s leadership is creating a hub to further promote Sierra Leone’s tourism potential. We salute their relentless efforts in making our country a destination that values both wildlife conservation and community development.

However, we were also confronted with the harsh reality of human encroachment. We saw areas of the forest vandalized and burned in the name of building dwellings. This reckless destruction is not only a direct threat to the chimpanzees’ survival but has also reduced water supply to other dams. We are strongly urging the government to:
• Continue demolishing illegal structures.
• Enforce laws against deforestation.
• Educate communities on the dangers of forest destruction.

TACUGAMA’s work aligns perfectly with SDG 15 – Life on Land, and protecting this sanctuary is protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

One of the most moving moments of our hike was standing at the site of a past landslide disaster. Thankfully, no one was living there at the time, but the tragedy serves as a powerful warning: this land is unsafe for human settlement. If encroachment continues, the risk of loss of life and property will only grow.

We were encouraged to learn that Tacugama is taking proactive measures by planting fruit-bearing trees that feed the chimpanzees and provide natural medicine for the younger chimps. This is conservation in action – preserving life while restoring balance.

Finally, we concluded our journey at the iconic Tacugama Waterfall. Here, nature’s beauty washed over us – quite literally – as we enjoyed a refreshing swim, shared snacks and juice, and celebrated the power of unity in protecting what we love.

🌍 Our message to Sierra Leone and beyond: Tacugama belongs to all of us. Let us unite to protect it – not as a luxury, but as a necessity for our survival and heritage. The sanctuary’s recent temporary closure due to environmental threats is a wake-up call. We must act now to prevent the mistakes of the past, including incidents where human negligence disrupted the delicate balance between wildlife and people.

To the Tacugama team, our tour guides, and rangers – we say a heartfelt thank you. Your work is the heartbeat of conservation in Sierra Leone, and we look forward to more partnerships in the future.

💚 Together, we can ensure that Life on Land thrives – for the chimpanzees, for nature, and for generations to come.

The Students’ Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals (SI4SDGs) was launched on the 19th October, 2023. By Prince Hindolo Pujeh at Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) as a student-driven platform aimed at building awareness, fostering innovation, and encouraging active participation in achieving the United Nations’ SDG 2030 Agenda. Since its inception, SI4SDGs at MMTU has been committed to creating an informed and action-oriented student community that understands the urgency of global sustainable development challenges.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the initiative has expanded its reach by forming a partnership with a sister organization at Eastern Technical University (ETU) Kenema. This partnership strengthens our ability to exchange ideas, share best practices, and coordinate joint activities that align with the 17 SDGs. Together, both institutions are working towards inspiring and equipping young people to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development in Sierra Leone and beyond.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower students to become informed and proactive agents of change who can contribute effectively to the achievement of the SDG 2030 Agenda. We aim to create a collaborative and inclusive environment where students can gain knowledge, develop skills, and engage in activities that promote sustainable development at local, national, and global levels.

Objectives
1. Raise Awareness: Educate students about the SDGs, their importance, and how they relate to everyday life and future careers.
2. Skill Development: Provide training and resources to develop skills necessary for implementing sustainable development practices.
3. Community Engagement: Foster partnerships with local communities, organizations, and stakeholders to promote sustainable development initiatives.
4. Advocacy and Leadership: Encourage students to take leadership roles in advocating for policies and practices that support the SDGs.
5. Research and Innovation: Support student-led research and innovative projects that contribute to achieving the SDGs.

Proposed Activities
1. Workshops and Seminars: Regular workshops and seminars to educate students about the SDGs and sustainable development practices.
2. Skill-Building Programs: Training programs on project management, leadership, advocacy, and community engagement.
3. Community Projects: Student-led projects such as clean-up campaigns, tree planting, and awareness drives on health and education.
4. Partnerships and Collaborations: Engagement with NGOs, government agencies, and international organizations to amplify impact.
5. Student Research Grants: Support for innovative student projects tackling sustainable development challenges.
6. Advocacy Campaigns: Public campaigns to promote SDG-related policies within the university and local communities.

Expected Outcomes
• Increased Awareness: Broader understanding of SDGs among students.
• Skill Development: Students equipped with tools to lead sustainable development efforts.
• Community Impact: Tangible contributions to local development through projects.
• Leadership Growth: A strong network of student leaders advocating for sustainability.
• Innovation: New solutions generated through research and collaborative initiatives.
