Female Ge***al Mutilation Has No Place in the Modern, Civilized World
I am Tenneh Bangura, a human rights activist who has stood up for the rights of others in society. Today, I want to use my voice to amplify the cries of marginalized women and girls who have been deprived of their right to live a decent and dignified life.
I witnessed this harmful practice at a very young age when I was subjected to it myself. At the time, I was made to believe it was simply part of our culture and tradition — a way to teach young girls how to become responsible wives. But the reality was the opposite.
I was forced to have parts of my flesh cut with razor blades, leaving my body in severe pain and discomfort for more than a week. It was a painful and traumatic experience. Some of my peers were also angry and afraid, but they felt they had no choice but to follow what was demanded of them — just like I did.
During the process, I witnessed disturbing practices, including the communication between the group leader, known as “So-Way,” and what she claimed were spiritual forces. These rituals were presented as sacred, but they were frightening and deeply unsettling. Many girls suffered physical and emotional consequences from this initiation, often without fully understanding what was happening to them. For some, the effects followed them into adulthood.
Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) is harmful, dangerous, and a violation of human rights. It is not a pathway to dignity or womanhood — it is a practice that causes lasting pain and trauma.
Today, we say NO to FGM in Sierra Leone and beyond. Women and girls deserve safety, respect, education, and the freedom to make choices about their own bodies.
Best wishes,
