Two journalists from our GIZ investigative fellowship were recently recognised at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and Independent Media Commission (IMC) Media Awards for their outstanding work in investigative and gender reporting.

Yeanor Kabia, a reporter at Radio Democracy 98.1, won Best Investigative Story for her report, “Illegal mining resurfaces at Lake Sonfon despite government shutdown”. Her investigation — conducted together with Ibrahim John Sesay — exposed renewed illegal mining activities at Lake Sonfon in northern Sierra Leone.

Mabinty Kamara, editor of Politico Newspaper⁠, received the award for Best Gender Story for her report about gender-based violence in the mines. Her work documents the experiences of women miners in Jaiama Nimikoro, eastern Sierra Leone, and highlights the sexual and gender‑based violence they face in mining communities.

Together, these stories have helped elevate national awareness of the conditions in Sierra Leone’s mining areas, highlighting the urgent need for stronger policy enforcement to protect these areas from illegal mining activities.
