FBC Journalism: High Fares and Empty Pockets: Campus Transport Woes

FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE

Students at Fourah Bay College (FBC) are expressing growing frustration over the recent spike in transportation costs from Model Junction to the campus, a situation that is leaving many struggling to afford basic daily meals.

Following a slight increase in national fuel prices, the informal transport sector comprising "poda-podas" and private "charter" vehicles has nearly doubled its fares for the steep climb up Mount Aureol. What used to be a manageable expense has become a significant financial hurdle for the student body.

"I now spend almost half of my daily allowance just to get to class and back," says Alusine Bangura, a final-year student who commutes daily. "By the time I reach the amphitheater, I've already spent my lunch money. It’s either I attend lectures hungry or I stay home and miss out."

The geography of FBC makes walking an exhausting and often impossible alternative for those with morning classes or heavy coursework. While the college administration has previously attempted to provide bus services, the current fleet remains insufficient to meet the demand of thousands of students.

Sia Kamara, a witness to the daily morning struggle at Model Junction, noted the desperation. "You see students literally fighting to get onto the few available vehicles," she observed. "The drivers know we are desperate, so they charge whatever they want, and we have no choice but to pay."

As exams approach, the student community is calling for an urgent intervention from the administration to subsidize transport or increase the frequency of the official college buses to ease the burden on their pockets.
