Menstrual Hygiene Day Celebration – Defence for Children International Sierra Leone (DCI-SL)

Location: Karene district ( Kakamba Community-Sella Limba Chiefdom)

Date: May 28th

Defence for Children International Sierra Leone with funds from the Government of Ireland through their Women and Girls Empowerment Project actively commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day, aiming to break the taboos surrounding menstruation and advocate for safe and accessible menstrual hygiene management for all individuals.

For the 2026 campaign, the theme is "Together for a Period Friendly World." This theme emphasizes global advocacy, education, and the necessity of ending the stigma associated with menstruation. The organization is committed to raising awareness and promoting open conversations about menstrual health, thereby fostering a supportive environment for women and girls using their Safe Space approach in communities.

Through this initiative, Defence for Children International Sierra Leone strives to ensure that menstrual hygiene is recognized as a fundamental aspect of health and well-being, enabling individuals to manage their menstruation with dignity and confidence.

The girls demonstrated learning through skits, questions and answers sessions.

A trained nurse, Mrs. Hassnatu Shaw leading the tour in all our five safe spaces in Karene district educates girls and women about the importance of the day, gave her Health Talk capturing key areas of Menstrual Hygiene and the importance of the day.

We are fixing the broken Kongo School

In the Kongo community, Sierra Leone, education is steadily taking shape — one step closer to a stronger future.

For many years, children in Kongo have faced challenging learning conditions, with broken classrooms that were death traps. The teachers struggled to provide space to safely accommodate the growing number of pupils. But today, meaningful progress is underway.💪🏽

With support from Lippa through the Defence for Children International – Sierra Leone (DCI-SL), the foundation for the new Kongo school has now been completed, and backfilling work is currently in progress. Community members are actively participating in the construction process, working together to prepare the foundation that will support the new classrooms. 🏗️🏫

This stage of construction marks an important milestone. The foundation represents more than concrete and soil — it represents the strong base upon which children’s education and future opportunities will stand.

When communities come together to build their own schools, they strengthen not only the structure itself but also the shared commitment to ensuring every child has access to safe and quality learning spaces.✨

Because every step in this construction journey brings the children of Kongo closer to a safer school and a brighter tomorrow.📚

📍 In the Mabojama community, Sierra Leone, education is taking shape — one brick at a time.

Mabojama and neighboring communities like Golawoma, Kortiyama and Kenema have never had a school before. Children from these communities work through several kilometers to access school in Dandabu. This challenge makes learning very difficult for children from these communities. Some get sick and some have dropped out and lost the opportunity to become educated and successful in life💪🏽

With support from Lippa, Defence for Children Sierra Leone is working with the community members to build a new school. They have begun producing bricks locally for the construction of the new Mabojama school. Day after day, men and women gather to mould and dry hundreds of bricks under the sun — a powerful demonstration of community commitment to education. 🧱🏫

This effort is more than just making bricks. It is about building a safe place where children can learn, grow, and dream of a better future.

When communities take part in building their own schools, they also build ownership, pride, and hope for the next generation. ✨

Because every brick laid today brings Mabojama’s children one step closer to a brighter tomorrow.
