🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE: SOLIDARITY & URGENT CALL FOR SUPPORT 🚨

The Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) expresses deep sorrow and stands in full solidarity with the Help Empower Polio Persons Organization (HEPPO) following a tragic fire outbreak that occurred today, 1st May 2026, at Pa Demba Road, Freetown.

This devastating incident has led to the displacement of over 60 persons with disabilities and their families, as well as the destruction of homes and properties. Sadly, one life an 8-year-old child was lost in the incident.

Victims who were already facing daily challenges are now left homeless and in urgent need of assistance.

This is a critical moment that calls for compassion, unity, and immediate action.

We are therefore calling on:

1. The Government of Sierra Leone
2. NGOs and humanitarian organizations
3. Donors and development partners
4. Well-wishers and the general public

To come to the aid of the affected families during this most difficult time.

We count. We matter. It’s time to reserve our space.
The GEWE Act promises inclusionβ€”but promises alone are not enough.
Yes, it guarantees 30% representation for women.
But without intentional inclusion, women with disabilities remain invisible within that space.
This is the gap we must close.
🎯 Our Demand:
At least 30% of the 30% quota under the GEWE Act must be specifically reserved for women with disabilitiesβ€”with clear systems for monitoring and public reporting.
Because this is not a favour.
It is a right.
It is justice.
It is equity.
When women with disabilities are included: βœ”οΈ Leadership becomes more representative
βœ”οΈ Policies become more responsive
βœ”οΈ Democracy becomes stronger
Inclusion without us is incomplete.
πŸ“’ Let’s move from words to action:
β€’ Recognize our leadership
β€’ Reserve our space
β€’ Monitor progress
β€’ Hold institutions accountable
Nothing about us without us.

Equality is not enough. Equity is the real inclusion.
The GEWE Act is a milestoneβ€”but it leaves a critical gap.
By treating women as one group, it overlooks intersectionality. In reality, this means women with disabilities remain excluded, even within the 30% quota meant to promote inclusion.
We are making a clear and urgent demand:
πŸ‘‰πŸΎ At least 30% of the 30% quota under the GEWE Act must be reserved for women with disabilities, with transparent monitoring and public reporting.
Without this, representation will continue to favor those already closest to power.
Inclusion must be intentional.
Representation must be measurable.
Equity must be enforced.

✊🏾 Design with us.
✊🏾 Budget with us.
✊🏾 Implement with us.
Nothing about us without us.

The GEWE Act is a milestone but it leaves a critical gap.
By treating women as one group, it fails to address intersectionality. And in reality, that means women with disabilities are still pushed to the margins even within a *30%* quota meant to promote inclusion.

We are making a clear demand:

At least *30%* of the *30%* quota under the GEWE Act must be specifically reserved for women with disabilities, with transparent monitoring and public reporting.

Without this, representation will continue to favor those already closest to power.

Inclusion must be intentional.
Representation must be measurable.
Equity must be enforced.

The Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues is proud to have collaborated with Welfare society for the Disabled in the successful delivery of a two-day Advocacy and Monitoring Training, bringing together 21 representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) across Kenema, Kambia, Bombali, Karene, Port Loko, and the Western Area.

Implemented under the Engaging People with Disabilities Project, with support from Irish Aid through Trocaire, this initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the voice, agency, and technical capacity of OPDs in Sierra Leone.

Through this training, participants are now better equipped to:

1. Advocate for their rights and inclusion

2. Monitor development interventions effectively

3. Engage meaningfully with stakeholders across sectors
At SLUDI, we remain committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not merely beneficiaries of development, but active agents shaping inclusive policies and programs.

We look forward to sustained collaboration and strategic partnerships that will further advance disability-inclusive development nationwide.

Together, we move from inclusion in principle to inclusion in practice.

Today we proudly celebrate an outstanding achievement within our community! πŸŽ‰

Congratulations to John Foday Kanu for being honored among the National 70 Most Influential Students Awards. This recognition is not just a personal victory, but a powerful statement of resilience, leadership, and purpose.

Your journey reminds us all that there are true abilities in disability. When individuals are given the opportunity to lead, to serve, and to shine, nothing can limit their impact. John has proven that determination, vision, and courage can break every barrier society tries to place.

At SLUDI, we believe that inclusion is not charity β€” it is a necessity. Today, John’s achievement stands as inspiration to every young person living with disability: your potential is valid, your voice matters, and your leadership is needed.

Let this be a call to all institutions, organizations, and leaders: create space, give opportunities, and watch greatness unfold.
Once again, congratulations John! Your story is changing narratives and building a more inclusive Sierra Leone
