Nzerengo Tere

Nzerengo Tere Nzerengo Tere is a movement for the liberation of African people. We empower the youth and women, educating them about their culture and history.

As herbalists, we believe in the healing power of nature, using natural remedies for health and wellness. Nzerengo Tere is a movement that calls for the liberation and celebration of African people. We believe in empowering African people and working towards ending oppression against our people. We support the most vulnerable amongst us and work with the youth and women, to empower them. We aim to

educate our people about their forgotten history and traditions through celebrating our culture and what makes us, us. Also, we are herbalists who believe in the use of nature as medicine. Welcome to our community ☀️

✨✨✨✨

✨ We’ve been quiet. And we want to tell you why✨

Over the past weeks, we have been navigating loss.
Grief has its own rhythm. And we chose to honour it.
Sometimes leadership means showing up loudly.
Sometimes it means stepping back to breathe, to heal, to gather strength.

We took a pause on social media, not because the work stopped, but because we needed to return to it whole.
While we haven’t been active here on social media, we have continued to be present where it matters most:
✨ In community
✨ In conversation
✨ In healing spaces
✨ And inside our learning spaces.

Our literacy program is still alive and growing, though we have now decided to call it Children Learning Spaces: because what we are building goes beyond reading and writing.

At the same time, our organisation is expanding to the West, where we intend to create meaningful spaces for decolonial education, cultural transmission, healing, and critical dialogue.

Now that we have rested (because rest is also resistance) we are back.

Back with clarity & with intention 🌞

WE YONE STORI: Stories That Heal 🕯️

During this year’s Inkundla Arts Festival 2025: «Mind Matters, Stories That Heal» we gathered with Nzerengo Tere at Mango Peak for a storytelling workshop rooted in ancestral wisdom and community reflection.

With Uncle Salami opening the workshop through the sacred story of the Balangi, we then all shared we yone stori dem. And talked about the values that each carry.

Our stories are more than just words, they pass on important African values, keep our Ancestors’ knowledge alive. They connect us. ✨

This felt like more than just a workshop but also like remembering & medicine.

Thank you to everyone who came with open hearts & curious minds, and who shared their tales with us. And to Inkundla Spaces for holding space for creativity and healing across Sierra Leone.

We Yone Stody Dem ✨

Our stories remember us:
Our Ancestors speak through our tales, our proverbs, and the quiet wisdom passed from tongue to tongue.

At the Inkundla Arts Festival, we’ll sit in circle and listen, to ourselves, to each other, to those who came before us.
Because storytelling is not just entertainment…
It is identity.
It is protection.
It is medicine.

Join Nzerengo Tere this Saturday as we explore how the stories we inherit can heal, reconnect, and liberate us.

Our Literacy Class visited EFA, the Environmental Foundation for Africa, to teach our children more about the environment and the important work of protecting and restoring it.

This journey with them hasn’t just been about reading and writing. It’s also been about reconnecting with their root and understanding who they are and where they come from. We believe it’s just as important that they learn about their environment and natural heritage: how their choices and actions affect the land, water and communities around them.
Environmental education helps them see that caring for nature means caring for their own future too. 🌿

Why is our literacy class African-centered?

Because our children deserve more than just ABCs.
They deserve to learn in ways that honour who they are and where they come from.

That’s why in our class, reading and writing go hand-in-hand with learning about Africa —
our countries, our languages, our leaders, our history.

We don’t just teach literacy —
We teach identity, pride & belonging.

Most of our children come from Mambo community. They come from families doing their best, but with very little. For most of them, this is their first time in any kind of classroom.

So we are teaching them the basics in literacy — but with a powerful African touch.
Because every child deserves to learn rooted in their truth 🫶🏾🫶🏾

Why is it important to give these children a chance at education rooted in their culture?

Because they’ve already been denied too much.

We are currently in need of school materials — pencils, notebooks, crayons, reading books — to support their learning journey.
If you’re able to donate or contribute in any way, please reach out 🙏🏾

Traditional art is more than creativity - it’s a living archive of African history, culture & identity. Salone traditional artists carry the wisdom of their Ancestors. That artistry should always be celebrated ✨

At just 34, Captain Ibrahim Traoré became president of Burkina Faso.
But what inspires us most is his message:
African unity. Self-determination. Pride.

At Nzerengo Tere, we teach our children about leaders like him —
so they know that power can look like them,
and the future is African.

Colonial education still shapes Sierra Leone and many African countries —teachers aren’t required to learn the Krio alphabet or their own local one. Elders recall a time when speaking Krio in school was forbidden.

It’s time to change that.

By also teaching the children the Krio alphabet - their own - we ensure that the right knowledge is passed on—honoring their heritage and decolonising our education.

Most children here speak Krio but rarely see it in written form ✍🏾

Salone has rich indigenous scripts like the Krio Alphabet, the Mende Kikakui & the Vai syllabary, but none of them are taught in schools and because of English the language history is being erased.

We’re looking forward to explore more of these indigenous scripts ✨

Our children are learning more than just letters —they are learning their land, their roots, their pride. 🌍✨

At our African-centered literacy class, children from underserved communities are being taught the power of language, the strength and beauty of African languages, and the joy of learning in ways that honour who they are.📚

We guide them in reading, writing, and speaking with confidence. But most importantly, we teach them to remember —to know themselves, their history, and their worth. You can be part of the journey too.
