**NEWS RELEASE**
(SLeLSA announces the Keynote Speaker for their inaugural conference on environmental justice and climate change)
**Sierra Leone Law Students Association (SLeLSA) to Host Conference on Environmental Justice in the Era of Climate Change**
The Sierra Leone Law Students Association (SLeLSA), is a consortium of law students from universities across Sierra Leone, is dedicated to promoting the welfare of law students, advancing legal education, and upholding the rule of law. Through research, advocacy, capacity building, and legal awareness, SLeLSA strives to foster a strong legal profession and empower future legal practitioners.
SLeLSA is set to host its inaugural conference under the theme: **“Environmental Justice in the Era of Climate Change in Sierra Leone.”** This event will explore the intersection of environmental justice and climate action, focusing on creating strategies to protect vulnerable rural populations from the effects of climate change.
Climate change is a global crisis affecting human rights, including life, housing, water, food, and health, all protected under international laws such as the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Sierra Leone has felt the impact of this global issue, yet the country's environmental protection laws have proven inadequate in addressing climate change and ensuring accountability.
The conference will bring together experts and stakeholders to discuss how Sierra Leone can strengthen its environmental laws and policies to prevent further degradation and promote justice for marginalized communities.
**Keynote Speaker**: *Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Yumkella*, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, will lead the conversation on the urgency of addressing climate change and policy coherence in Sierra Leone.
This event marks a significant step in SLeLSA’s mission to advance legal advocacy and contribute to solutions for national and global challenges.
