Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. However, due to a lack of awareness and misinformation, many misconceptions persist, especially in developing countries.
These myths contribute to stigma and discrimination, making it difficult for people with epilepsy to access appropriate care and live fulfilling lives. Below are some common myths about epilepsy, along with the corresponding facts to correct them.

Epilepsy remains one of the most neglected neurological conditions, particularly in low-income countries like Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, it is estimated that 60,000 to 100,000 people are living with epilepsy. However, only 10% of this population receives treatment due to several challenges, including a lack of awareness, stigma, and deeply rooted misconceptions about the disease.

As an organization (Medics for Epilepsy Support & Treatment), we are committed to changing this narrative. This year, we proudly joined the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), Medical Assistance Sierra Leone, and the Epilepsy Association of Sierra Leone in commemorating International Epilepsy Awareness Week (10/2/25 to 14/2/25). Our focus for this year's campaign was to increase awareness, combat stigma, and educate teachers and pupils about epilepsy.

To achieve this, we strategically targeted schools and media platforms, including radio, television, and social media, to amplify our message and reach a wider audience.

Below are photos from the various schools we visited during the epilepsy awareness outreach.
