Sierra Leone Animal Welfare Society - SLAWS

Sierra Leone Animal Welfare Society - SLAWS Sierra Leone Animal Welfare Society works in Freetown to protect the welfare of domesticated and wild animals, prevent cruelty and promote kindness to them

Sierra Leone Animal Welfare Society (SLAWS) was formed by Dr Abdul Gudush Jalloh, the only practising vet in Sierra Leone, in 1988. It is a not-for-profit organisation based in Freetown, dedicated to the humane care of animals and advocacy for their welfare throughout Sierra Leone and Africa. Dr Jalloh became a vet in response to the tragic death of his brother from rabies - a disease which is usu

ally spread by dogs, yet can be prevented by vaccination. SLAWS was set up by Dr Jalloh with the specific objectives:
To reduce the incidence of dog bites and human deaths from rabies
To encourage responsible pet ownership
To vaccinate all owned pets and treat them for ticks, fleas and worms
To register all pets and provide a means of identification
To conduct humane education programmes for livestock and pet owners and implementing partners of livestock programmes. So far, the small team at SLAWS have vaccinated 50,000 dogs against rabies and sterilised 45,000, as well as carrying out public education on rabies risk reduction and humane treatment of animals through school 'Kindness Clubs'

𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē: 𝐀 𝐓𝐚ðĨ𝐞 ðĻ𝐟 𝐓ðŦ𝐚𝐧𝐎𝐟ðĻðŦðĶ𝐚𝐭ðĒðĻ𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇ðĻðĐ𝐞.

This is 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē, a stray dog who once roamed the streets of Wilberforce. One sunny afternoon, 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē caught the compassionate eye of Prof. Watson, who couldn't stand to see this poor dog suffer any longer.

In our community, it's common to mistake scabies for rabies. 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē, seen in the photos, was suffering from severe alopecia due to mites, causing him to lose all his fur. Fearful of being bitten, people treated 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē cruelly. During the day, he would hide, making survival even more challenging.

In February 2024, 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē was brought to SLAWS Vet Clinic at Congo Cross for treatment. After a thorough examination by Dr. Abdul Jalloh, it was clear that 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē needed immediate care. He was admitted, and treatments began right away. Over several weeks, 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē started to respond to the dedicated efforts of our team, supported by Prof. Watson. Today, 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē is a completely transformed dog!

𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē has received all his routine vaccinations and major treatments. Soon, he will undergo castration and have a microchip inserted as he prepares to join a loving family ready to adopt him.

This story embodies the spirit of a compassionate society. A small act of kindness has entirely changed 𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðē’s life. Sadly, there are still thousands of "𝐋ðŪ𝐜ðĪðēs" on our streets, waiting for kind-hearted people to help them.
