Today, we join many others in celebrating a remarkable leader, mentor, and inspiration Happy Birthday, Sir! On this special day, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the invaluable guidance and support you have consistently extended to us within the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme. Your leadership is not just about giving instructions; it is about empowering people, nurturing talent, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued, motivated, and inspired to excel.

Working under your supervision has transformed the way we see leadership. You lead with wisdom, humility, and clarity of purpose. You consistently demonstrate that true leadership is service, service to the team, to the institution, and to the communities we're committed to uplifting across the ECOWAS region. Your passion for strengthening regional integration, promoting youth empowerment, and building resilient institutions is reflected in everything you do.

As part of your team, we're grateful for the opportunities you have created for growth, learning, and innovation. You believe in people even when they doubt themselves, and you challenge us to go further, think bigger, and deliver better. You listen with intention, advise with compassion, and correct with grace. These qualities make you not just a boss, but a mentor, a role model, and someone whose influence goes far beyond the workplace.

Today, we want to honour the consistency with which you demonstrate integrity, discipline, and commitment. You carry responsibilities with dignity, and you inspire others to rise above mediocrity. Your vision for a stronger ECOWAS, driven by the energy and creativity of young people, continues to inspire us every day.

As you celebrate another year of life, we pray that God blesses you with good health, long life, renewed strength, and divine favour. May this new chapter bring you joy, fulfilment, and greater achievements. May you continue to shine as a light of inspiration to everyone who has the privilege to know and work with you.

Thank you for being an exceptional leader, one who builds people, leads with purpose, and creates positive impact everywhere you go. Your birthday is not just a celebration of your life but also a celebration of the influence you have on the lives of those you lead.

Happy Birthday, Sir!
May your day be filled with love, happiness, and the honour you truly deserve.

Ms Aissatou Diallo, an ECOWAS Volunteer serving in the Grafton community, undertook a self-sponsored community project to repaint the Almadiyya Muslim Primary School. The school’s buildings had faded and needed improvement, prompting her to initiate the beautification project to create a more welcoming and motivating learning environment for pupils.

The project involved repainting the exterior and selected interior parts of the school, preparing surfaces, applying primer and finishing coats, and purchasing all materials. Local youth and community members supported the effort by assisting with labour.

The initiative greatly improved the school’s appearance, boosted students’ morale, and strengthened community engagement. Despite minor challenges such as high material costs and weather delays, the project was successfully completed and received strong appreciation from school authorities and community leaders.

Overall, Ms Diallo’s project demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, and commitment to community development, positively impacting education and inspiring similar initiatives within Grafton.

First and foremost, I give all glory, honour, and praise to Almighty God. Without His grace, favour, and guidance, none of this would have been possible.

A Refresher Training on Comprehensive Neonatal Resuscitation

On 27th October 2025, a refresher training on Comprehensive Neonatal Resuscitation was held at Moyamba Government Hospital, facilitated by a Paediatric Nurse Specialist, and attended by staff from the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

The training aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in neonatal resuscitation, focusing on the latest guidelines and best practices for managing newborn emergencies. It covered key topics, including airway management, ventilation techniques, chest compressions, thermal regulation, and teamwork during resuscitation.

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on simulations, participants gained confidence and competence in responding to birth asphyxia and other neonatal complications. The session also emphasised the importance of effective communication, infection prevention, and proper documentation.

The training improved staff readiness, strengthened teamwork within the SCBU, and reinforced the hospital’s commitment to quality newborn care. It was recommended that such refresher trainings be conducted regularly, with continuous simulation practices and adequate provision of resuscitation equipment to sustain improved neonatal outcomes.

The recipient of this year’s Best Performing ECOWAS Volunteer Award 2024 is a shining example of what the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme stands for. Serving as an Anaesthetic Nurse under the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone, this volunteer went far beyond the call of duty.

In a district hospital where resources were limited and challenges were many, he became a pillar of strength, not only delivering safe and effective anaesthesia services but also mentoring local staff, advocating for better equipment and medication, and ensuring critical surgical care reached even the most vulnerable.

He assessed patients with precision, administered anaesthesia with the highest regard for international standards, introduced innovative solutions in a resource-poor setting, and fought tirelessly for safer, cleaner, and more responsive operating environments. For all these reasons and more, we recognise this volunteer, not just for what he has done, but for the passion and purpose with which they served.

Your compassion, professionalism, and tireless spirit are an inspiration to us all. On behalf of the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, we say thank you. Thank you for serving, for leading, and for leaving behind a legacy of care and excellence. Congratulations once again, Mr. Dzakah Richard Yao, and we look forward to all the remarkable things you will continue to achieve.

ECOWAS Volunteers Programme Donated Items to the Raining Season Orphanage.

As ECOWAS marks 50 years of regional unity and progress (1975–2025), the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (EVP) in Sierra Leone commemorated this significant milestone with a heartfelt outreach to the Raining Season Orphanage Home located at Lumley Road, Wilberforce, Freetown. This charitable initiative was not only symbolic of the regional body’s commitment to integration and solidarity but also a practical step towards uplifting vulnerable children in West Africa.

During the visit, the EVP team donated various essential items to the orphanage children. Notably, sanitary pads were distributed to the girls as a means of promoting menstrual hygiene and reinforcing the importance of health and dignity for adolescent girls. Donating sanitary products is a timely and thoughtful intervention that addresses a critical but often neglected need in orphanages and low-resource settings.

Boys were not left out in the act of giving; a basketball was presented to them as a symbol of unity, recreation, and holistic development. The team encouraged the children to engage in sports as a way to boost their physical and mental health, enhance teamwork, and foster discipline and social interaction. The items were received with immense gratitude by both the children and the management of the orphanage.

The Country Coordinator for the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, in his address, expressed his appreciation to the Raining Season Orphanage Home for welcoming the initiative. He stated: As long as I remain the Country Coordinator for EVP Sierra Leone, I will continue to support this home and bring smiles to the faces of these children. This is just the beginning.

The Director of the Raining Season Orphanage expressed deep gratitude to the EVP team, highlighting that this gesture came at a very crucial time when the home was in dire need of support. He provided insight into the broader mission of the orphanage, which extends beyond the children living within the facility to others in the community. Some of our children are in universities, and though they do not live with us, we support them with food, tuition fees, and educational materials. This donation will go a long way in helping us meet those obligations.

The event concluded with a touching display of appreciation from the children. They sang songs, prayed over the visiting team, and joyfully expressed their thanks. The children pledged to make their country and the ECOWAS community proud, recognising that such acts of kindness fuel their motivation and determination to excel in life.

This visit by the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme is not just a moment of giving it is a reaffirmation of the values of solidarity, care, and regional support that define the spirit of ECOWAS. It is a reminder that sustainable development begins with investing in the lives of the most vulnerable among us.
