ECOWAS hosts Extra Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers on recruitment and the case of staff from AES Countries from Grade P4 and below.
Today, in Abuja - Nigeria, the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers was held - focusing on critical issues around regional importance, which includes the allocation of statutory positions among member states and the recruitment and status of staff from AES countries (Grade P4 and below). This session was chaired by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation - who underscored, during his remarks, ECOWAS’s commitment to transparency, equity, and regional solidarity.
H.E. Kabba also conveyed gratitude from ECOWAS Chairman - His Excellency the President Julius Maada Bio, for the support of member states since his election as Chairman of the Authority’s Heads of States. He showered praises to Nigeria for its warm hospitality. The extra ordinary session was called to address pressing regional challenges, including the rising extreme terrorist violence perpetrated by the Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)., civilian casualties, and humanitarian crises driven by climate shocks and displacement. H.E. Kabba also highlighted President Bio’s recent diplomatic engagements across West Africa, including visits to AES member Burkina Faso and discussions with Niger’s leadership, with the aim of fostering dialogue and restoring constitutional order across the Region.
His statement, emphasises the sessions’ commitment to a fair and inclusive decision-making process which strengthens ECOWAS credibility - also advancing economic integration, peace, and security. H.E. Kabba paid tribute to the sacrifices of ECOMOG in restoring peace in Sierra Leone during its 11yrs civil war where himself, was a child victim of the conflict. He called on ECOWAS to reinforce the need to remain a pillar of multilateralism and regional stability. The Council reviewed proposals from the Ad-hoc Ministerial Committee on statutory positions, with closed-door discussions set to shape actionable outcomes for the region’s collective good.
