📢 The Youth Nexus Innovation Labs (YNIL) project is underway in Bo and Kailahun.

Drawing on lessons from previous ACRG initiatives, young people and youth organization leaders working in local communities have participated in co-designing the project’s E-STEM training curriculum and learning activities.

Their experiences and perspectives are helping to shape learning content focused on water quality, soil health, and environmental resilience. The co-designed materials will now undergo technical advisory review to further strengthen their relevance and practical application.

Through YNIL, participating young people will have opportunities to build practical STEM skills, explore local challenges, and develop community-based innovation ideas.

The Youth Nexus Innovation Labs (YNIL) project is co-funded through the AU–EU Youth Action Lab under its Innovation Grant category.

Action for Community Resilience Group (ACRG) is proud to implement the Youth Nexus Innovation Labs Programme as a Cohort 2 Innovation Grantee under the AU-EU Youth Action Lab.

Applications are now open for young people and community actors passionate about climate resilience, water and soil health, and community-driven innovation in Sierra Leone.

We are accepting applications for:

• Youth Innovators (Bo & Kailahun Districts only)
• Facilitators (Residents of Sierra Leone)

Selected participants will benefit from:
• Capacity strengthening and mentorship
• Innovation and collaboration opportunities
• Community-based learning and engagement
• Participation in youth-led resilience initiatives

Today on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible girls and women who continue to shape the journey of ACRG and transform their communities every day.

From leading biosand water initiatives that bring safe water to families, to restoring habitats and protecting biodiversity, women have been at the heart of the change we see across the communities we work with.

Through our Global E-STEM Agroforestry Learning Lab, girls and women are stepping forward as innovators, environmental stewards, and leaders—using science, technology, and local knowledge to create sustainable solutions for their communities.

Despite many social barriers and challenges, they continue to rise with courage, resilience, and determination. Their leadership inspires hope and reminds us that real change often begins with empowered women and girls.

Today we celebrate their strength, their vision, and their unwavering commitment to making their communities better.

🌱♻️ Turning Food Waste into Opportunity – Methodist High School, Bo

When food waste is thrown away indiscriminately, it quickly becomes a nuisance — producing foul smells, attracting pests, and creating unhealthy surroundings. Yet the same waste can be transformed into something valuable.

Through the Bo Waste to Compost & Justice Initiative, Action for Community Resilience Group (ACRG) donated a waste bin to Methodist High School, Bo to support proper collection of food waste for composting. Students were engaged on the environmental and health risks of poor waste disposal and introduced to composting as a practical solution that turns waste into a resource.

The session sparked strong interest, highlighting the power of youth in driving sustainable change within their schools and communities.

🤝 We welcome partnerships and support to expand this initiative and promote responsible waste management across Bo City.

E-STEM Introductory Engagement | Njala University

đź“… February 17, 2026

Action for Community Resilience Group (ACRG) hosted an introductory greenhouse and composting session with a cross-section of Cohort One students from the University Secondary School and the Experimental School at Njala Campus, Njala University under the Agroforestry Learning Lab.

Students were introduced to the basics of greenhouse nursery management, compost preparation, soil structure, and agroforestry principles. Through demonstration and open Q&A, they explored how environmental conditions influence plant growth and the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.

The Learning Lab’s IoT monitoring dashboard was recently tested and will soon be integrated into instructional activities. Students will use the system to monitor soil moisture, pH, nutrient levels, and light intensity as part of structured STEM learning inside the greenhouse.

This activity forms part of the Agroforestry Learning Lab, for which ACRG received the 2025 Global E-STEM Awards Excellence Prize in recognition of its youth-led, gender-responsive approach to environmental education.

The Global E-STEM Awards are funded by Pratt & Whitney and administered by North American Association for Environmental Education - NAAEE. Implementation is carried out with technical and advisory support from the Directorate of Research and Development, Njala University in Sierra Leone
