A cross-section of staff from the Sierra Leone Educators Association participated in the 2026 National Labour Conference and Social Dialogue, organized by the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, and the Sierra Leone Employers Federation. The event took place from 30 April to 1 May 2026 at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown.

The event brought together government officials, labour unions, employers, and international partners as part of this year’s May Day celebrations.

Key highlights from the conference:

* Deputy Minister of Employment, Hon. Mohamed Lansana Dumbuya, chaired the event and announced major labour reforms:
i. Ratification of ILO conventions on migrant workers & occupational safety
ii. New laws: Employment Act 2023, Work Permit Act 2023, Overseas Employment & Migration Act
iii. Minimum wage increased from Le800 to Le1,200 (effective April 2026)
iv. Pensions improved from Le25 to Le250

* Challenges acknowledged: youth unemployment, wage disparities, pension compliance, and skills mismatch between graduates and market needs.

* Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh spoke on “Challenges & Opportunities of Decent Work in the Digital Era” – stressing the need to ensure digital jobs benefit all, especially youth and women in the informal economy.

* Marx Conteh (Secretary General, Sierra Leone Labour Congress) praised the peaceful social dialogue approach.

* SLEA’s presence ensured that educators’ voices were part of critical conversations on bridging education and employment, addressing skills shortages, and shaping the future of work.

* The conference concluded with social dialogue sessions, panel discussions, and stakeholder engagements focusing on bridging the gap between education and employment, addressing skills shortages, and exploring opportunities within the creative industry. Activities were climaxed with the national commemoration of May Day celebrations hosted by President Julius Maada Bio.

SLEA remains committed to advocating for decent work conditions for all educators to promote Inclusive quality education in Sierra Leone.

🌍 Happy World Earth Day! 🌱

One simple way to live a happier life?
Take care of our planet. 💚

When we nurture the Earth—whether by planting trees, reducing waste, or just appreciating nature—we nurture our own well‑being, too. A cleaner environment means cleaner air, calmer minds, and a brighter future for everyone.

Let’s celebrate today by doing one small act of kindness for our world. Every step counts. 🌿

Happy Earth Day! Let’s grow happiness together. 🌎✨

Support the School Livelihoods and Education Project – Launching May 2026

We’re excited to launch the School Livelihoods and Education Project, a low-cost school garden pilot growing groundnuts and maize in two remote schools in Bombali district, Sierra Leone.

This project fills a critical gap in the national Feed Salone strategy: schools have been left out – until now.

Starting May 2026, we will prepare land, plant seeds, and engage students and community volunteers – all with a budget of just $1,000 for two schools where land is already available.

We request donor support or partnership to fund:

· Seeds and basic hand tools
· Meals for volunteers (food for work)
· Field visit expenses

By October 2026, the gardens will produce enough groundnuts and maize to replant, support school feeding, and demonstrate a scalable model for national rollout.

Partnership options include:

· Seed funding for the two schools
· Technical collaboration
· Policy advocacy to integrate schools into the Feed Salone Initiative

📚 Our education program goes beyond donating books and pens.
We make sure every material serves its real purpose: helping students read better, understand more, and apply what they learn.

But we can't do it alone. Many more students are waiting for learning materials.
Donate books, pens, and other supplies today to support our mission.

Watch the video – peer learning in action!

We are so proud of one of our students, Mariatu. During her presentation through our Student Leadership Program, she spoke about the relevance of a school garden – and she absolutely nailed it. 🌱🎤

Seeing our students build confidence, public speaking skills, and leadership qualities through peer learning is truly inspiring.

Way to go, Support our Schools Garden Program to plant and graow food crops together with our students.

Learning is better together. 🤝

Watch how our students support each other during peer presentations. Each learner studies a topic and presents it the next day – building public speaking skills, grammar, and teamwork.

So impressed by their progress!

During our students' peer sessions, each student is given a topic to study and then present the next day – a powerful way to build their confidence and communication skills. 🎤📚

Through our Student Leadership Program, we are building future leaders — one skill at a time with just one Laptop. 🧠🎤

Since the Easter holiday, we've strengthened our student leadership training, and the results are already showing. Students are gaining practical knowledge and essential life skills, including improved study techniques, leadership abilities, and confident public speaking.

Through peer learning sessions and regular practice, these students have become more engaged, self-assured, and better equipped to lead among their peers. We invest in student leadership to build future leaders who can make a real difference in Sierra Leone.

But we can't stop here. With your support, we can set up a training center, equip it with digital tools, and train even more students — giving them the knowledge and skills they need to lead. Let's grow this impact together.
