It has been a marvelous two days at the Food Allergens Asia Conference in Bangkok, organized by the Asia Life Sciences Institutes Network (ALSIN), co-organized by ILSI Global, and held in partnership with several other institutions. The event brought together experts from across Asia and around the world to share the latest developments in allergen control measures, allergen labeling requirements, including definitions of Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL), as well as allergen prevalence in Asia and advancements in allergen testing.
We were grateful to hear from Dr. Kang Zhou of the FAO, who shared the latest in allergen guidance; Dr. Motohiro Ebisawa, who provided an overview of allergen prevalence in Asia and Japan; and Prof. Clare Mills, who presented a detailed analytical review.
Industry insights were shared by Prof. John Donaghy of Nestlรฉ and Janette Zhou of Danone, who presented best practice processes for food allergen management. Miao Guo of PepsiCo described their cross-industry partnership to strengthen their operational control. Prof. Michelle Colgrave addressed emerging issues related to novel proteins, while Prof. Samuel Godefroy emphasized the importance of effective risk communication.
Additional contributions covered country-specific updates, labeling regulations, Codex harmonization efforts, and other regional initiatives.
In addition, an expert workshop on food allergen testing methods was held. The session focused on improving the consistency of ELISA tests and advancing the standardization of mass spectrometry and proteomics approaches.
It was a pleasure meeting everyone. We hope the conference will spark increased attention to food allergen issues across the Asia-Pacific region. We look forward to continued collaboration and progress in food allergen management throughout the region.
