From Walden to Woodlands

From Walden to Woodlands From Walden to Woodlands is an interfaith anthology of poetry about nature. From Walden to Woodlands (FWTW) unites faith, nature & poetry.

We successfully launched our interfaith anthology of poetry on nature in Singapore in Sept 2015 after months of gathering submissions from the community & working hard with many collaborators. Moving forward, we continue to reach out & seek for opportunities to spread the words of FWTW to more people, particularly, on our mission to reconnect people to our nature & environment from our various fai

th perspectives (religious & spiritual, including the non-religious) through the creative words of poetry. Get A Copy: https://www.ethosbooks.com.sg/products/from-walden-to-woodlands-an-anthology-of-nature-poems

The anthology showcases a diverse range of writings from a kaleidoscope of faith perspectives. This collection draws inspiration from native flora, fauna, and natural habitats, besides exploring humanity’s relationship with the environment. Poets featured include familiar names in the Singapore literary landscape like Alfian Sa’at, Wena P**n, and Gilbert Koh. Accessible and compelling, this anthology is a timely and essential source text for individuals interested in faith, nature, or the environment, as well as students and teachers of literature. The writings provide a glimpse of the imaginative richness, penetrating insights, and haunting beauty that can be found in nature and spirituality. Reviews:

- Prof Philip Holden, Department of English Language & Literature, National University of Singapore:

“Spirituality and the natural environment are two resources often overlooked in Singapore. In linking them, the path-breaking poems in From Walden to Woodlands provide new spaces of openness and questioning, offering possibilities for renewal, contemplation and then action in the social world.”

- Ustaz Muhammad Fazalee bin Ja’afar, Head of Harmony Centre, Singapore:

“When Muzakkir and Wai Kit first introduced me to this initiative, I wondered how these two young gentlemen could cultivate such interest in going back to nature and simplicity in this current consumerist world. The message of this anthology moves me and I applaud this important effort. It is very heartening to see passionate young people come together to express their views on nature and diversity through poetry. Such efforts bring hope towards the preservation of our natural environment as well as the strengthening of our unity in diversity.”

Last Sunday, we had our From Walden to Woodlands reunion at the National Library Singapore as part of Poetry Festival Singapore 2025 — we can hardly believe it’s been ten years since our book launch! We also had the opportunity to welcome the new second edition of the poetry anthology 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, which includes a new section entitled 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩, based on environmental themes.

As we reflected during our editors’ panel discussion (with Wai Kit Ow Yeong, Muzakkir Bin Samat, and Angelia), 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 wasn’t just an anthology of nature poems. It was a ground-up, home-grown youth initiative which helped to plant seeds for a movement that is still going strong — promoting environmental awareness through eco-poetry in the Singapore literary scene. 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 upholds this spirit by promoting this message to a whole new generation of readers today, reminding us to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the beauty of everyday moments.

It was heartening to catch up with all the members of our organising team! We’ve kept in touch over the years, but it’s been a while since we’ve properly met up. Also it was lovely to listen to all of our readers share (in-person / via video) their poem contributions to 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 and/or 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴: Aaron Maniam, Marc Nair, Farheen Mukri, Gilbert Koh, Jee Leong Koh - Poet, Leonard Ng, Ann Ang, Kamaria Buang, and Euginia Tan (and also a shout-out to Benjamin Ong for his poem ‘Selasih’).

We’re grateful to Ethos Books for co-organising this reunion with Poetry Festival Singapore — and thanks to all readers and contributors to both anthologies, as well as all who joined and/or supported our event. May we continue to foster a deeper connection between our communities and the natural world, and may our poems serve as a catalyst for meaningful conversations and actions for years to come.
