🌿 In Loving Memory of Rosemary Ann Moss 🌿

Here is a photo of Rosemary in her element, taken during an adventure group trip to visit The Lost Waterfalls of Jerantut, Pahang. Date unknown.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news that Rosemary Ann Moss passed away on 11 March 2026. Rosemary once served as Hon. Treasurer of Cicada Tree Eco-Place. She loved being in nature and was a great supporter of nature and nature groups like ours.

May she be received into a place of light, peace, and happiness.

May the forests she loved, the rivers she walked beside, and the wild places she cherished forever remember her spirit.

Rounding off a year of biodiversity advocacy and awareness efforts, Cicada Tree Eco-Place joined many other green groups at the Nature Conservation Masterplan (NCMP) engagement session hosted by NParks on 29 November 2025.

During the session, participants brainstormed initiatives to support the NCMP thrusts and discussed how different stakeholders could facilitate partnerships for community stewardship and biodiversity outreach. The session was also a great opportunity to meet members of the nature community and make meaningful new connections.

Birdwatching at Kranji Marshes on World Animal Day, Sat 4 Oct 2025

A rare chance to enter the Core Conservation Area made this World Animal Day truly special. In just one morning, we spotted 41 bird species, including the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Common Flameback Woodpecker, and the beautiful Little Bronze Cuckoo.

We also learned a simple, delightful trick:
Use your smartphone through a telescope to take incredible close-up shots of birds — no telephoto lens needed.

It was a meaningful reminder of how alive and vibrant Singapore’s wild spaces are, and why nature education matters.

Return After More Than a Century

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, 28 October 2025. The mangrove forest had a surprise visitor.

After more than a century, a Rhinoceros Hornbill — once thought locally extinct in Singapore — has recently been sighted in the wild.

The Rhinoceros Hornbill once soared over Singapore’s lowland rainforests, feeding on ripe figs and nesting in tall, ancient trees. As our forests disappeared, so did this magnificent bird.

Its recent reappearance is a hopeful reminder that when we protect nature, she often finds her way back.

Experts believe this individual may have flown from southern Johor, where small populations still survive. Nature, after all, knows no borders.
Every fig tree, every green corridor, every act of care matters.

Our gratitude goes to nature lovers who keep their eyes open for moments like these, reminders that the forest is very much alive.

At Cicada Tree Eco-Place, we share stories to inspire awareness and action for Singapore’s remaining wild spaces.

Have you ever seen a hornbill in the wild?
Or which 'lost' rainforest bird would you love to see return next?

Let’s keep the conversation and our forests alive.

What’s one thing you can do to help nature in your everyday life?

"Take a moment each day to step outside and breathe in nature.
Notice the trees, the pattern of the leaves,
and the tiny creatures moving quietly among them.
Let yourself slow down and simply be present."

What’s one thing you can do to help nature in your everyday life?

"Do one small thing for nature — skip single-use plastics!
Carry a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, or coffee cup.
Every refill and reuse helps keep plastic out of our oceans and protects wildlife.
Tiny choices, big difference!"

What’s one thing you can do to help nature in your everyday life?

"Choose Slow Moments
Take your coffee or tea

Notice the breeze, the birds, and the sunlight — caring for nature begins with noticing it."

Post-Event Highlight: Mā’arif Learning Festival 2025

It was a full house at our Reading & Art Workshop during the Mā’arif Learning Festival at Madrasah Al-Ma’arif Al-Islamiah on 20 September 2025.

The workshop was inspired by the book Top 10 Weirdest Critters of Singapore’s Rainforest, published by Cicada Tree Eco-Place, and presented by:

Amaani Arfian – author
Clarice Woon – illustrator and designer
Teresa Teo Guttensohn – editor

Children had a wonderful time discovering rainforest creatures such as the Twin-barred Flying Snake, Black-bearded Flying Dragon, and more.
Through storytelling, drawing, and sticker activities, the library came alive with creativity, curiosity, and joy.

At Cicada Tree Eco-Place, we are dedicated to building bridges between people in Singapore and our spectacular biodiversity—because when children learn to love nature, they grow into protectors of it.

Our heartfelt thanks to Madrasah Al-Ma’arif Al-Islamiah for hosting us, and to all the teachers, students, and organisers who made this event a success.

Top 10 Weirdest Critters of Singapore’s Rainforest is now available at Kinokuniya, Book Bar, and Wardah Books Loft.
