A Mother's Wish

A Mother's Wish Meltdowns are not inevitable! Www.amotherswish.com.sg To date, AMW has run four holiday programmes during the June and December school holidays.

A Mother's Wish (AMW) is a enterprise that helps autisric individuals (including those with profound autism) by educating and training family and professional caregivers, as well as advocacy. A Mother's Wish (AMW) is a registered social enterprise that organises and subsidises engaging and meaningful activities for individuals with moderate to severe autism (aged six and above) during the school h

olidays. Our dream is to create a lifelong community that provides affordable activities for autistic youths and adults with moderate to severe autism all year round, all across the island, even after their primary caregivers have passed on. To date, we have been subsidising AMW's holiday programme activities in order to cap each activity per participant at $40, while compensating the service providers, coordinators, and venue hosts adequately. We have raised money primarily through the sales of water colour paintings by Jean-Sebastien Choo, an untrained and unguided artist with autism. He contributes 30% of all sales to AMW. They range in price from $100 to $800; more than 100 paintings have been sold in the last three years. Sebastien is also an AMW participant; thus, he has been doing his part to contribute to the building of the AMW community for his future. For more information:

Transform Your Connection with Your Autistic Loved Ones: Free One-on-One Caregiver Coaching (Online, June to End-July, 2026, 6 spots left)

What this ONLINE SUPPORT by KAH YING is all about: For caregivers to (1) recognise that raising their autistic loved ones can be a JOYFUL experience and (2) learn HOW to do so through the EpiEco caregiving model.

What EpiEco is all about: a long-term, empathetic, and respectful caregiving approach focused on treating the EMOTIONAL WELLNESS of your autistic loved ones as the EPICENTER of the ECOSYSTEM of caregivers.

What EMOTIONAL WELLNESS means: safety, joy, love, and a sense of belonging — the same for the autistic person and for all of us.

What it is NOT (clarification after speaking to some caregivers): Increased ability to tolerate our sensorily overwhelming environment at their own detriment (which can lead to unhappiness and meltdowns).

This is why with EpiEco, we focus on training caregivers on HOW to
INTERACT WITH (NOT CONTROL) their autistic loved ones with RESPECT, CARE, and JOY.

Before we can look to the OUTSIDE WORLD to embrace our autistic loved ones, we must be willing to CHANGE OURSELVES!

Though he is profoundly autistic, Sebastien, with his artistic talent, has an empowering mission. Through his autism art legacy, he can educate others (no profoundly autistic individuals are NOT crazy), empower (give him the dignity of work true to his being), and sustain his sanctuary (in a supportive environment). Buy a painting or a digital version. Learn more about the mission through a 1-on-1 online session: we would love to share insights, photos, and videos of Sebastien’s sanctuary.

The PROFOUND AUTISM ART MISSION is about changing the public's perspective of profoundly autistic people like Sebastien, my son. No, he is not crazy or weird. He is a one-of-a-kind human being who creates beauty. You don’t have to buy a painting to support this mission. For eg., you can support Sebastien by purchasing affordable, one-of-a-kind digital art featuring inspiring messages and close-ups of his acrylic art: landscape, portrait, and triptych. Let’s change minds together and make the world a better place for the vulnerable! THANK YOU!

Speaking Up for Profoundly Autistic Individuals Like My Son at APAC2025 — Autism Meltdowns Are Not Inevitable!

The Asia-Pacific Autism Conference 2025 boasted an international audience including autistic individuals (who can speak). Yet there was a group whose voices were conspicuously missing — profoundly autistic individuals. In this vacuum, the prevalent representation about them — their need for extensive support, their lack of functional speech, and behavioural challenges — tended to be bleak.

However, with my presentation at APAC2025 of a "loving response" to a nonverbal autism meltdown, I turned this perception upside down. Instead of lamenting about Sebastien's meltdown, I exposed my blindness to my insensitive behaviour towards him and my failure to acknowledge his nonverbal communication…

In my book with Adi Hariyanto (Sebastien's carer) — EpiEco: A Breakthrough Approach on Profound Autism, we call his nonverbal communication ALIS — Authentic Language Based on Instincts and Sensing. ALIS is dynamic, in-the-flow, and improvisational: profoundly autistic individuals use their voices, gazes, fingers, every part of their limbs, and objects to generate one-of-a-kind messages without inhibition. Now, if we were to recognise that ALIS — their native language — is no less valid than ours, we would level the communication playing field, and enable them to connect with us.

Though it took nine years in Bali, we finally heard Sebastien's voice. Although he may not express himself with words, like his speaking autistic counterparts, Sebastien is no less proud of himself. He sees himself as different from, not lesser than, the rest of us. EpiEco is our respectful and empathetic approach of embracing the uniqueness of profoundly autistic individuals (as Epicenter) and supporting them with sensitivity (Ecosystem) in a world that is not built for them.

This is A Mother's Wish's mission to challenge the mainstream world to make it an INCLUSIVE place for ALL.

My presentation at APAC2025 of a "loving response" to a nonverbal autism meltdown exposed neurotypical blindness to our insensitive behaviour towards profoundly autistic individuals and our failure to acknowledge their nonverbal communication… (https://www.amotherswish.com.sg/product-page/epieco-a...

: Presenting on Meltdowns at Autism Conference

Today, at the Asia-Pacific Autism Conference 2025 in Perth, Australia, I paid homage to Sebastien — my profoundly autistic son — the inspiring Epicenter, and our caregiving team, who has become Sebastien's supportive Ecosystem (EpiEco). What we have succeeded with Sebastien — building an authentic relationship with him and mitigating his meltdowns — could not have been possible without this collective effort. Meltdowns are one of the most challenging behaviours of profoundly autistic individuals.

They are also one of the most misunderstood phenomena. In this workshop, we will be DEBUNKING the two myths surrounding the meltdowns of profoundly autistic individuals:

(1) Meltdowns are inevitable.

(2) Profoundly autistic individuals tend to have meltdowns because of their lack of speech.

In reality, if we possess an accurate understanding of why profoundly autistic individuals have meltdowns, we can lessen the intensity and frequency of meltdowns.

Don't miss out on this workshop that will transform your perspective of meltdowns and empower you with the insights to address your struggle with your child's meltdowns. Sign up here: https://shorturl.at/pvgw7.
