Why Camera Trapping Works Perfectly for Sambar Deer :

Overcomes Nocturnal Behavior:
Sambar deer are most active from dusk to dawn. Camera traps use "no-glow" infrared (IR) flash technology, which captures high-quality photos and videos in total darkness without emitting a bright white flash that would startle the deer. Thats why we only use "no-glo" feature as our standard field trail camera.

Eliminates Human Disturbance:
Sambar deer have an acute sense of smell and hearing, making them highly sensitive to human presence. Cameras can be left in the field for 6 months, allowing the deer to behave naturally without being scared away by intruders

Navigates Dense Habitats:
These deer typically inhabit forests, rugged terrains, and dense foliage where men tracking is difficult and dangerous at night. Cameras can be mounted along deer trails, wallows, and salt licks where Sambar frequently gather.

Provides Continuous Monitoring:
A camera trap operates 24/7 in all weather conditions. This continuous coverage provides accurate data on activity patterns, helping researchers map out exactly when the deer are most active throughout the night.

Enables Individual Identification:
High-resolution footage allows our research team to identify individual Sambar deer based on unique features like antler structures (in stags), scars, body size and body coloration. This is crucial for estimating population density.

Just an update from the scene after last night's fire. Upon inspection, it appears that only the fringes along the road got burnt thus not affecting the inner fields. The animals and birds are doing fine and they are not affected by the fire
The same month of last year is becoming hotter and drier. Long-term greenhouse gas emissions are driving up baseline temperatures, which fundamentally alters traditional weather cycles.

Earlier this evening, around 7 PM, a bush fire ignited at Gali Batu near the fence. The fire has been contained (see photo), and we hope it will not reignite. A lady was present at the time and reported the incident to 995, for which we extend our gratitude.

We assure everyone that the deer are safe, as they are located well away from the fire's vicinity. In fact, they were just seen by Safi, one of our team members, at 10:30 PM, grazing nearby. We even joked about it, noting how these mischievous deer were frolicking while everyone else was occupied with firefighting... lol.
