Parliament resumes tomorrow, 8 Sep 2026. I carried forward my PQs on Singaporeā€™s energy capacity, reserve calculations and grid stability.

I also filed new questions on EV charging and shade coverage.

Is the petrol kiosk model still relevant in todayā€™s EV charging landscape? If so, are we planning for enough suitable locations and ensuring that they are equipped with the electrical capacity needed for high-powered DC fast charging? I have asked for data comparing the utilisation of EV chargers at petrol kiosks and public car parks to help us better plan the next phase of our charging network.

With Singapore getting warmer, I have also asked how we account for the loss of shade when mature trees are felled for public sector developments. Young replacement saplings may restore the number of trees, but they cannot immediately replace the canopy cover, cooling effect and ecological functions of mature trees.

Good infrastructure planning must anticipate our future needs, while ensuring that Singapore remains reliable, liveable and comfortable for everyone.

Upcoming on 10 September, if Parliament sits.

Investing in our children is no childā€™s play. It is an investment in our human capital and Singaporeā€™s future.

Iā€™ve filed an Adjournment Motion, ā€œScreen-Free Children: Reclaiming Childhood in the AI Eraā€, to explore how we can help our children grow up with healthy minds and healthy bodies.

Being screen-free is one part of this. Government regulation can help reduce harm, but we also need meaningful alternatives to screens. Affordable community programmes, age-appropriate play spaces and stronger support for families all have a role to play.

Our children will grow up as digital natives. Screens will be important tools, but they should not become their companions.

Dialogues matter.

Having a safe space to exchange honest views respectfully is precious.

Together with fellow advisers, I joined youths from our Sembawang family to hear their views on the recent National Day Rally announcements. We spoke candidly about how AI will interact with human workers, how we should better govern social media algorithms, and how we can protect our biodiversity.

Our youths should not simply inherit Singapore. They should be part of the conversations early and have a stake in shaping our future plans.

Joined the leaders of our six Quanzhou-affiliated clan associations for a gathering. They are the Singapore Chin Kang Huay Kuan, Singapore Lam Ann Association, Singapore Hui Ann Association, Singapore Ann Kway Association, Eng Choon Hway Kuan Singapore and Tung Ann District Guild.

Thrice a year, the six clan associations gather to share updates on their recent activities, publicise upcoming events, rally support and exchange best practices. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Singapore Ann Kway Association also has its own ā€œbaby bonusā€ for members!

Last nightā€˜s dinner was hosted at the Chin Kang Gallery (ę™‹ę±Ÿå»Š), where I also learnt about the journey of our pioneers, from their early days as coolies to establishing a school, as well as how the association is reaching out to youths today.

Our clan associations have played an important role in supporting generations of Singaporeans. Their work continues to evolve as they find new ways to care for their members, engage younger generations and preserve our shared heritage.

P.S. A bonus was bumping into Mr Tan Yew Beng, whom I first met when I was a young chorister. I was glad to meet him again and learn about all the good work he has done for our communities!

Happy Teachersā€™ Day!

Celebrated our Naval Base PCF teachers last Friday evening!

Early childhood educators play an important role in shaping our childrenā€™s first few years. From supporting their socio-emotional development and motor skills to helping them gain confidence and independence, our educators patiently guide them every step of the way.

I presented them with a small token of appreciation to thank them for their tireless work and dedication. May they continue to nurture many more generations of PCF children in the years ahead.

I also had the honour of presenting long-service awards to Sujie, Divya, Kim Neo, Xiaoxia and Syahrunnisa for five years of service; Joyce for 10 years; Sheila for 20 years; and Mdm Kang for an incredible 35 years of service.

Thank you for your dedication and for touching the lives of so many children.

P.S. It may be true that spending time with young people keeps you youthful. The teachers almost brought the roof down with their energy!

Also joined North Link Building for their 7th Month Dinner!

I caught a glimpse of the performance by ꖰē‡•é“ƒę­Œå‰§å›¢ Sinyenlin Hokkien Opera Troupe and enjoyed hearing the committeeā€™s colourful stories of how the estateā€™s Zhongyuan Festival celebrations have evolved over the years.

It was also nice to reconnect with the local business community, including a handful of our volunteers and residents who have their business premises here.

Thank you, Mr Law and the committee, for bringing everyone together and putting together this dinner!

Joined the 7th Month Dinner at Food Xchange @ Admiralty on 30 August with Dr Lim Wee Kiak.

The Zhongyuan Festival is a celebration of filial piety and caring for one another. Each year, our small and medium businesses at Food Xchange come together not only to uphold this tradition, but also to pay it forward.

This year, they raised S$66,000 for KDF @ 405, equivalent to two kidney dialysis machines, and a further S$6,000 for the Naval Base Education Fund.

This is the Singapore spirit. Those who have the means look out for those who have less, and give back to the community.

Thank you to the businesses and organisers for your generosity and for keeping this meaningful tradition alive!
