She came from Myanmar to Singapore to support her family.
But a workplace accident changed her life forever.
Migrant domestic worker (MDW) Su Su Mar was illegally deployed to work at a food stall owned by her employerโs father. While operating equipment she had never been trained to use, she suffered a devastating accident that severed four fingers on her right hand.
Behind stories like Su Su Marโs are many other MDWs facing hardship silently โ workplace injuries, emotional distress, unpaid salaries, or difficult living conditions โ often with nowhere to turn for help.
This is why the Domestic Employees Welfare Fund ( ) matters.
Your support can help provide urgent assistance, care, and support to migrant domestic workers during times of crisis and vulnerability.

EVERY domestic worker deserves protection, dignity, and hope.
We were saddened about migrant domestic workerโs Su Su Marโs severe injury to her right hand when she first came to us.
As reported in this news report https://bit.ly/3lj4EJa she was illegally deployed to perform work for a food stall owned by her employerโs father, during which she accidentally severed four of her fingers on her right hand because she was not advised on how to safely operate the appliance.
Su Su Mar suffered a lot physically, emotionally and mentally. During her stay with us, we constantly checked in on her emotional well-being. When she expressed her wish to get legal representation, we roped in our partner Law Society Pro Bono Services to find her a pro-bono lawyer. Through our frequent discussions with the lawyer and coordination with the authorities, Su Su Mar was able to obtain a fair sum of compensation for the injury sustained.
Our strategic partner The Salvation Army Singapore helped to encourage her to use her left hand to write and carry out some functional tasks, and also conducted lessons for her to pick up basic English together with our shelter residents.
Our charity arm - the Domestic Employees Welfare Fund ( ) provided her with an ex-gratia amount and customised a prosthetic hand for her so that she could resume some functionality in her daily activities. Su Su Mar was grateful for our assistance through this difficult time. We wish her all the best in her future.
To support our domestic workers in Singapore facing distressed situations and who may need humanitarian assistance or upskilling opportunities, we appeal to your generosity to donate to our charity, the Domestic Employees Welfare Fund.
