We'd like to thank all our book club participants for showing support, and so thoroughly engaging in conversation with Walid about Palestine!💡

Through his monograph, 'Why Palestine?', our conversation explored how the personal truly is political, even for and some might say especially because of, issues that appear to be far removed from Singapore.

From institutions and actors in the global arena influencing Palestine's future, to how the Palestinian cause has politicised the previously politically apathetic, to how it has revealed the seeming moral inconsistencies of actors in civil society, it truly was a rich discussion.

With plenty of questions fielded from the participants, we also covered home ground, discussing how local politicians and everyday Singaporeans have (or have not) responded or taken action, with some side banter on GE2025 and recent political developments as well.🫣

Let's continue to show up and engage with civic issues ✊ See you all again soon at our next session and stay tuned!

Thank you all for coming down for our Bring Your Own Book Club last weekend! 🔥We had so much fun meeting you all, and having convos about books and issues we care about (it seemed like we were never gonna leave...).

We discussed diverse topics across our circles, such as: racism and misogyny, our varying exposure and experiences with income inequality, meritocracy versus privilege, different kinds of mental health therapies, capitalism and work culture.

Such opportunities for open convos don't come easy. Thank you for showing up with open hearts to share and listen ✊🫶

📚 Scroll to the end to see all the books participants brought! Which ones are you adding to your TBR list?

See you all again soon at the next book club!

p.s. special shoutout once again to for being such a cosy venue!

Socratic Circles is a new civic dialogue initiative under CAPE designed to create safe, structured, and reflective spaces for individuals to engage in conversations about political and civic life in Singapore.

In Singapore and around the world, many people are afraid of “talking politics.” We’ve been told it’s rude, risky, or that we should leave it to the experts. But democracy belongs to all of us — and learning to talk about civic life is part of being a good citizen.

A Socratic Circle is a structured conversation where people come together to explore big, often uncomfortable questions. It’s inspired by the Socratic method, named after the Greek philosopher Socrates, who believed that the best way to arrive at truth was by asking good questions, not giving perfect answers.

Socratic Circles aims to cultivate civic muscle and mutual understanding in a polarised world. By inviting people to speak from experience and sit with complexity, we aim to create space for thoughtfulness in a noisy time.
