Supporting patients and families affected by blood cancers

Services:

Counselling (Individual / Family):

Our in-house counsellor provides emotional support to our beneficiaries and/or their family members to cope with anxiety, grief and loss, bereavement and other forms of emotional distresses that might arise from beneficiaries’ medical condition. Confidentiality is of utmost importance in all our counseling relationships. Counselling sessions are sched

uled on an appointment basis and are conducted in our counseling room at the Foundation. Home visits are also offered as an alternative when beneficiaries are feeling too physically ill to travel to the Foundation for counselling. The in-house counselor will also conduct home visits to assess our beneficiaries’ coping capacities in their home environment, family dynamics and financial situation. If needed, the counsellor can link the beneficiaries to other resources in the community. Beneficiaries’ Support Programme:

Beneficiaries’ Support Programme is a service by Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation for our beneficiaries who are newly diagnosed or suffering a relapse of their medical condition. The support and friendship that the beneficiaries receive from their befrienders will help them to build resilience and strengthen their inner resources so that they are better equipped to withstand the negative emotions and/or doubts which may arise during their treatment period prior to remission. Each befriending relationship will be unique as befrienders will be specially matched with the beneficiaries according to their life experiences and/or backgrounds. Befrienders will be from diverse backgrounds and they will be volunteers who are above 21 years of age, have a heart for our beneficiaries and enjoy befriending them. Befrienders are required to have a basic certification in counselling. LLF will work hand-in-hand with the befrienders to provide training that will equip the befrienders with skills to build strong befriending relationships with their beneficiaries. Prior to the start of a befriending relationship, all befrienders are required to attend a briefing cm training session. Support groups and on-going training during the befriending process will be provided to help befrienders have more meaningful sessions with their beneficiaries. This in turn gives befrienders valuable learning opportunities for their own personal development. In the long run, this programme can be extended to non-beneficiaries.

🌿 Supporting Well-Being Through Holistic Care 🌿

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation (LLF) recently organised a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Health Talk for blood cancer patients and their caregivers as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting holistic well-being throughout the cancer journey, last Saturday.

The session explored how Traditional Chinese Medicine may complement conventional cancer treatment, while emphasising the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before incorporating any complementary therapies. Participants also learned practical strategies to help manage common treatment-related symptoms and support their overall health and quality of life.

At LLF, we believe that empowering patients with reliable knowledge and practical resources enables them to make informed decisions and navigate life beyond blood cancer with greater confidence.

Together, we continue to support every step of the journey towards living well beyond blood cancer.

Thank you Dr Denise Tan, Senior Consultant, Sengkang General Hospital and Eugene Quek, Physician, Singapore Tiong Chi Medical Institute for the wonderful session.

When someone is diagnosed with blood cancer, two lives change overnight.

One is the patient.
The other is the caregiver.

Behind every person receiving treatment is often a spouse, parent, child or friend quietly carrying an invisible burdenβ€”managing appointments, navigating uncertainty, making difficult decisions, balancing work and family responsibilities, and trying to stay strong even when they are overwhelmed.

Yet caregivers are often the ones least likely to ask for help.
At the Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation (LLF), we believe blood cancer care extends beyond medical treatment. While financial assistance remains an important part of our work, we also recognise that emotional wellbeing, connection and social support are equally important for both patients and those who care for them.

Through our psychosocial support programmes, LLF helps patients and caregivers build resilience, connect with others who understand their journey, and find support beyond the hospital walls. Our Beneficiaries' Support Programme pairs individuals with trained volunteer befrienders who share similar lived experiences, offering encouragement and companionship when it matters most. We also provide educational and community activities that help families navigate life with and beyond blood cancer.

No one should have to face blood cancer alone.

If you are caring for a loved one with blood cancer, know that seeking support is not a sign of weaknessβ€”it is part of caring for yourself, too.

Together, we can ensure that every patientβ€”and every caregiverβ€”has someone walking alongside them.

🌿 Finding Calm, One Mindful Step at a Time

At Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation (LLF), we believe that caring for our community goes beyond medical support. Supporting emotional and mental well-being is also an important part of the journey.

Last week, our participants gathered for a Mindful Walk at the Botanic Gardens. Guided by our mindful coach, participants slowed down, immersed themselves in nature, and practiced being fully present with each step. It was a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and find moments of calm amidst life's challenges.

Through activities like these, LLF hopes to create safe spaces where our community can nurture their overall well-being while connecting with nature and themselves.
