The Straits Times' Medical Mysteries series shines a light on rare diseases or unusual conditions that are often little understood. In this feature, the story turns to Matthew and his late younger brother Isaac, both diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome.

Since 2012, our Star PALS team has been journeying alongside Matthew and his family, providing holistic care across the physical, psychological, social and spiritual domains. Through regular home visits, the team supports the family in managing care at home, ensuring they are not alone on this journey.

On 6 June, our Star PALS patients and their families joined us for Family Day, where we celebrated with an Unbirthday Party. In Alice in Wonderland, an unbirthday is a celebration of all the days that are not your birthday. In many ways, this reflects what we endeavour to do at HCA Hospice — Creating Good Days, not just on special occasions but every single day.

We kicked off the day with a skit performed by the actors from Temasek Polytechnic's Teatro to get everyone in a magical mood. Families took part in art jamming, terrarium making, and face painting, and enjoyed a performance by our volunteer singer Adelyn.

More than just a day of fun, the outing gave families a chance to rest, reconnect, and simply be a family again. With support from staff and volunteers, parents could enjoy a moment of respite and connect with others who understand their journey.

Thank you to our staff and volunteers for making the day a success, and to all the families who joined us — we hope you enjoyed with us!

Two decades ago, Miao Lan arrived in Singapore as a foreign nurse with no idea how deeply this country would shape her life's work.

Today, she leads MediHELP, HCA Hospice's tele-service offering urgent advice and support to patients and caregivers. In palliative care, she journeys alongside patients in their final chapter, holding space for comfort, dignity and quiet compassion.

It hasn't been a straightforward road. But every challenge has only deepened her commitment to for the people she serves.

Introducing Open Endings – Fostering Dialogues, a thoughtfully curated talk series designed to spark dialogue, reflection, curiosity and constructive conversations. Through this series, we aim to give the public greater access to knowledge and diverse perspectives on palliative care and caregiving.

Previously known as Learn@HCA, the series has been rebranded to better reflect its focus on creating open, meaningful exchanges around life, death and care.

What makes an ending good? It's a question that touches on our deepest hopes – for dignity, for comfort, for connection and for the chance to say what matters most. Yet for many of us, it remains one of the hardest conversations to start. For this session, we are collaborating with Maisie Cheong, a speaker and consultant specialising in human connection, to explore what a good death can look like, how we can better prepare for it, and what each of us can do to make it possible.

HCA Remembrance Day is a time for families to come together to honour and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed on. This year, families of our former beneficiaries gathered at HCA Oasis@Outram Day Hospice on 16 May, finding warmth and comfort in shared remembrance.

The day was filled with meaningful moments: families crafting their own pipe-cleaner flowers with support from NUS Project Havenue's volunteers, alongside a photo bar for families to print photos of their loved ones to have a physical memento of their memories together. We ended the day with a remembrance ceremony, where families took part in a candlelight vigil to share a moment of silence and find comfort in community.

To the families who joined us this year, thank you for allowing us to journey alongside you through bereavement and grief. We hope the day brought you support, encouragement, and hope for the days to come.
