A series of performances to usher in our exciting residency at Singapore American School for Jan/Feb 2026. Performed exciting Sundanese tunes as well as a Betawi dance collaborating with both old and new friends. Thank you for being a part of this.

UNESCO officially recognized Indonesian Gamelan as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 15, 2021, sparking celebrations and increased focus on this traditional percussion orchestra, which serves as a vital part of Indonesian identity, fostering community, spirituality, and teaching intergenerational skills. This inscription promotes safeguarding and sharing gamelan’s rich traditions globally, with events often occurring around this December date.

After prince Rama’s wife is kidnapped by the demon king Rahwana to his island kingdom, Rama, on his way there, is faced by a great obstacle: the sea. The divine hero is furious at the sea, and uses his powers to heat it up, killing everything alive. Finally, after the sea god pleas with Rama, he agrees to a causeway being built, with the help of an army of monkeys, and against the resistance of sea creatures allied with Rahwana.

Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble, with special guests Ki Aneng Kiswantoro, Fani Rickyansyah, and Wibowo. NUS Department of Southeast Asian Studies, SUSS College of Interdisciplinary and Experiential Learning, Asian Civilisations Museum, SKALA, CROP, and Gamelan Asmarandana.

Wayang Cinema.

Betrayed and cast into the river, young Bratasena meets a sea serpent god who gifts him with a magical kite that amplifies his feelings. Bratasena’s sadness and homelessness cause the kite to unleash an epidemic in a broken world.

Amidst ruins and disasters, his journey becomes both a reckoning with violence and a discovery of the true joy of play.

This performance will feature Wayang Cinema, an innovation pioneered by Ki Aneng Kiswantoro that combines shadow puppetry with cinematic visuals and live and digital music.

“Shameless! As if destroying forests were not enough - people even make it into a show!” says the boar. The heroic Pandawa brothers clear a forest, which magically becomes their luxurious palace, and the forest spirits merge into the Pandawas - the classic tale of the wayang kulit theatre, now told from the perspective of the forest animals, becomes a story about wayang, as an art that celebrates destructive heroes and their civilisation. The happy end: the boar hunts down the puppeteer.

Forest, Sea, and Rather Destructive Heroes: Three Javanese Shadow Puppet Plays
𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭.

Forests fall. Seas boil. Animals are slaughtered. An epidemic is unleashed. Such are the deeds of cherished heroes in these performances of Javanese shadow puppet theatre (𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘵)—reimaginings of the Mahabharata and Ramayana that unravel the deep entanglements between human ambition, civilisation, and the natural world. Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage, 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘵 blends storytelling, visual imagery, and gamelan music into a multi-sensory performance.
