The Asian Film Archive's (AFA) mission is to save, share and explore the art of Asian Cinema.

The Asian Film Archive (AFA) is a charity that focuses on culturally important works by independent Asian filmmakers. It preserves Asia's rich film heritage in a permanent collection and promotes a wider critical appreciation of Asia's cinematic works through initiating programmes like screenings and talks. More than just a repository of film and tape, AFA aspires to be a hub for the film communit

y, contributing to culture, scholarship and industry. The Archive’s collection includes works by some of Asia's renowned filmmakers like Lino Brocka, Hussain Haniff, U-Wei Hajisaari, Eric Khoo and Mike de Leon. The Archive was the 2007 winner of the New Non-Profit Initiative Award presented by the National Volunteers and Philanthropy Centre (Singapore), which recognises organisations for their originality, sustainability, impact, and best practices. We are an affiliate of the prestigious International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and a member of the Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archives Association (SEAPAVAA). On 1 January 2014, the Archive became a subsidiary of the National Library Board in continuing its mission to preserve and share the film heritage of Asia, and to inspire greater appreciation for film, its art and industry.

🎞️ A glimpse into rehearsals for 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩.

This Friday, cinema moves beyond the conventional theatre space. Beginning in the atrium of Oldham Theatre, six short films will be accompanied by live soundscapes from Biru.

We will return to the theatre for our seventh and final film, 𝘈𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘰 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 (2025), presented with its original soundscape by sound designer Cheng Lijie ().

Get ready to move, mingle and experience cinema through shifting spaces, sounds, and ways of seeing.

Both the band and Lijie will be chatting with writer JX Soo () after the show.

“Every image of Singapore seems to arrive already mediated: renewed, copied, authored by no one,” writes JX Soo. In this reflection of the experimental short films of Singapore Shorts ‘26’s In Transit programme, he examines if the reinterpretations of these images through the band Biru’s live soundscapes is where sincerity survives.

👨‍🍳🌳In this documentary, we follow Michelin-starred chef André Chiang as he prepares to close his Restaurant André after eight years. Explore his philosophy, relationships and experiences both in the kitchen and out of it as he closes this chapter of his life.

🎶 “Be moved, be surprised, be mesmerised. In times like these when the humanity of the arts is under constant challenge, I hope audiences can come in to be reminded of the diversity of the human experience,” says Cheng Lijie, sound designer for award-winning films.

A sound designer, production sound mixer and producer based in Singapore, Lijie’s works have travelled to major festivals — Locarno, Busan, BFI London, Sheffield Docfest, Rotterdam, etc. Most recently, he mixed and designed Pek Jiahao and Ang Jiajun’s 2025 short As if to Nothing (Telluride, Winner – Zinebi Best Short) and Nelson Yeo’s 2023 feature Dreaming & Dying (Winner – Locarno Golden Leopard – Filmmakers of the Present and Swatch First Feature Award).

🔊 Curious to find out what movement sounds like?

Step beyond the cinema and into 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩, an Expanded Cinema programme where six short films by Singapore-based filmmakers are reimagined through a live score by 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘂 — a DIY joint-project comprising Iqbal Rohan (), Nashrudin Shariffudin (), Farizi Fauzi (), Daniel Borces () and Mateen Azlan ().

Going beyond a conventional theatre screening, 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩 begin with an immersive audiovisual experience in the atrium, inviting audiences to move through the space as Biru performs in real time. Expect a melting pot of jazz, krautrock, drone, and everything in between!
