Reflections from the Awardees
“Attaining the Chief Scout Award was something I never thought I could do. I’ve always been a quiet person, often avoiding challenges and missing opportunities since primary school. But with the encouragement of those around me, I decided to try for the award because I wanted to make them proud. It wasn’t easy, but the journey taught me valuable and critical skills that contributed to who I am today. The hardest part for me was the interview. It was something I had always feared and avoided. Yet, I vividly remember walking out of that room with a smile. Everyone was supportive and attentive, making the environment feel safe. For once, I could speak up without fear of being judged. I even got to hear the stories of other Scouts and realised that everyone has their own struggles. This journey allowed me to grow as a person and forge new friendships. I learnt the importance of perseverance, confidence, and responsibility. It was one of the rare times I felt truly proud of myself. Looking back, I’m glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone to pursue this award. I don't regret it and I am thankful for all the experiences and opportunities Scouts gave me.”

" Throughout my 4 year journey in Scouts, I have faced and went through a multitude of challenges, rehearsals and celebrations together with my peers. Scouts has taught me multiple lifelong lessons and values to uphold, be it from the meetings held or from the advice passed down from my seniors. To start with, it has taught me the importance of teamwork. Being a part of the Patrol Leader Council, we had to organise and run a lot of meetings for our juniors so that they could learn new scouting skills such as backwoodsman or knot-tying. These tasks allowed me and my fellow peers to develop our communication skills and overall knowledge of working as a team. Without proper communication, teamwork and unity, do not expect to go far in your scouting journey. Additionally, it has allowed me to grow as a leader. Being a patrol leader was no easy task. Having to take care of your juniors whilst also teaching them and getting them to work as a team are responsibilities that I at first did not know whether I would be able to handle. But as the months and meetings went by, I was able to perform better in my role and now know what it takes to be a leader. It is not just about giving out orders and instructions that makes one a good leader, it is also whether people genuinely look up to you as a role model and feel belonged in your patrol, to have that strong sense of brotherhood. However, I believe that my most important takeaway from all of this is that in life, we will have to accept that not all things will go our way. Our outdoor cooking sessions can be ruined or cancelled due to heavy downpours. One of our daily meetings may not run as smoothly as others because one of the patrol leaders fell sick. We can go through as much planning as we want, anticipating every possible scenario and making up counter-measures, but in the end it can all go sideways because of one thing or another. However, we can’t do anything as it is simply out of our control, we cannot change the past or the future and sometimes, it is best to just let it happen. Persevere, learn from our mistakes and try to be better next time and if that does not work, at least we put in the effort and thought into it. The journey leading up to this has truly been a rollercoaster of emotions. I will never forget all the laughter and memories made together as a unit, from the campfire songs we sang, to the small talk during pioneering or backwoodsman, to even the meals shared together during group camps. I would like to thank the scouters, teachers, juniors and most importantly, my peers in the PLC for making this journey something to cherish forever."
