Have you ever been rejected by those you love or falsely accused by those you trusted? It must have been a painful experience.

In our text today, Joseph understood rejection from those he loved and served. We want to notice how God brought about mental and emotional healing in Joseph's heart and mind? God restored his wounded spirit by giving him success beyond measure. During the years of Egypt’s great prosperity Joseph was blessed with two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

Manasseh’s name meant “making to forget” and was Joseph’s expression of his gratitude toward God who had enabled him to forget “all my trouble and all my father’s household” (verse 51). God’s rich blessings had enabled him to blot out the painful memories of the past, especially the hurt and bitterness which could only harbour a grudge against his brothers and seek an opportunity to get revenge. Joseph was able to forget all the pain associated with the events. The emotional sting was gone. He was not in bo***ge to past experiences.

The second child was called Ephraim, which means “made fruitful”. The Hebrew is a form that means something like “super-fruitful.” God had made Joseph fruitful in the land of his suffering. Joseph demonstrated that he had not forgotten what he suffered in Egypt. But he also let us know he was now rejoicing in what God had both allowed and done in his life. He understood both the trial and now his triumph. The scars were deep, but God's healing was deeper.

Are you willing to stop reliving the past hurts and start resting in the present grace of God? Let us focus on the present instead of the past. We can’t change the past. We must understand that the past can hurt us only if we give it permission to. Joseph let the past go. He found that God helped him to forget the hurt of the past and he began to live in the fullness and joy of the present.

In Scripture we see the examples of Joesph and Job being tested. Many questions are raised. What’s God doing here? Where is God? What does God see that I can’t? Job said, “I know this – ‘But He knows the way that I take: When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.’”

The moulding and purifying process is long and painful at times. Trials are gold in the making of a child of God. Remember God is the refiner and He decides how long the process will take. When God is finished, you’ll come forth as gold and be able to serve Him where He chooses.

In this passage we saw that Joseph was released at the right time or appointed time. He had been forgotten by the royal butler for 2 full years. It was 2 years of continued suffering, pain, and solitude. But it was also 2 years of preparation and character development.

God gave Pharaoh two dreams that the wisest men of the kingdom were unable to interpret. Here, the butlers remembered Joseph. There is great danger in seeking spiritual answers in the wrong places. Answers must be sought from God’s revealed truth.

Joseph interpreted the dreams and gave suggestions to Pharoah on what he had to do. Pharoah recognized that Joseph possessed the single most important characteristic of a true leader. He was “a man in whom is the Spirit of God” (v.38). He appointed Joseph to oversee the food supplies of all Egypt.

When the reward comes, remember to thank God without pride. J. Osward Sanders wrote, “Not every man can carry a full cup. Sudden elevation frequently leads to pride and a fall. The most exacting test of all is to survive prosperity.” God rewards faithfulness. When He does, be grateful, but not proud.

It is very possible that we have broken heart for longer than desired or expected. Joseph had his hopes and dreams dashed; but God never left his side. When the trail was over, we will be a vessel fit for the Master use.

Joseph was ready for the pressure and the responsibility. He would overcome because God had prepared him.

Although heartache and disappointment come suddenly and without warning, our Saviour knows our breaking point and the process is designed to reshape us and not ruin us. A.W. Tozer writes “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.”

Joseph was at one of the lowest moments of his young life after he was sold into slavery to Egypt. He is purchased by a man named Potipher where Joseph quickly rose to a place of authority and prominence. Potipher's wife accuses Joseph of attempting to r**e her after she was spurned by him. An enraged Potipher has Joseph thrown into the King's prison. Joseph’s crime was honouring his master and maintaining sexual purity.

Where was God when he is experiencing all this unfair treatment? The reality was that God was there all along working to refine the character of Joseph. God was teaching Joseph to be the same man in every circumstance so that one day he would be one who could resist temptation. He had much to learn in the depths of a royal Egyptian prison.

Warren Wiersbe says this about Joseph’s time in prison: “God permitted Joseph to be treated unjustly and put in prison to help build his character and prepare him for the tasks that lay ahead. The prison would be a school where Joseph would learn to wait on the Lord . . . He would learn that God’s delays are not God’s denials” (Be Authentic, p. 111).

This story proves that God honours those who dare to say no. It’s always better to do right the first time. Going to jail for doing right is better than living in the prison of a guilty conscience. It is better to do right and sleep well than to toss and turn because you couldn’t say “No.”

It would be disillusionment and disappointment if we put our trust in men. Joseph's trust was in the Lord. The butler had forgotten Joseph but God hadn't. These are the very times that build into us the indispensable character quality of patient trust.

We can learn from Joseph's example and how he handled injustice. We must not let bitterness control us. We must not turn against God during time of disappointment. We must wait for God to vindicate. God knows what He is doing. You must remember that God has not abandoned you.

Temptation comes in many different forms - material, personal, and sensual. We want to see how Joseph won his great victory over temptation.

God protected Joseph from temptation. He was protected by God’s presence during his stay in Egypt. Although difficulties often make it is easy for us to complain, murmur, fall into despair and tempt us to turn away from God. Joseph didn’t turn away but chose to serve God faithfully. He trusted God no matter what. Joseph determined to serve the best He could be in whatever circumstance he was in. Joseph made the choice to be a servant to the glory of God if God had made him one.

Joseph had just about everything, and he was a still a great target for temptation. Potiphar’s wife was both very persistent and subtle in her approach to tempt Joseph. Joseph’s response to temptation was (1) Refusing to yield, (2) Counting the cost, and (3) Realizing that it was a sin against God. He also resisted the temptation by avoiding situations of temptation altogether - he fled from it.

We must remember that temptation is never from God. Some people even try to blame God for their sins, but God is not responsible for the things that tempt you! God tests His children, but He always sets the test up so that we can pass. Satan tempts us, but always to make us fail! Temptation is never from God!

These verses teach us that life can sometimes seem incredibly unfair. The trouble that came into Joseph’s life were because he was sent by his father to look for his brothers. Sadly, his own flesh and blood were not only capable of harming him but even considered murder! The lesson to learn is that parents need to pay close attention to what is happening in the lives of their children. Parents need to know who their friends are and what they are up to, actively steering them in the right direction.

Joseph’s immediate response to his father’s instruction was obedience. He faithfully carried out the task he’d been given. His brothers saw him coming as he arrived in Dothan. Their hatred had grown into a desire to murder their own brother. They hated him so much that they are willing to kill him. In the providence of God, he was sold as a slave to Egypt, which ultimate resulted a journey to Egypt so that he could become the right man, in the right place, at the right time to rescue the people of Israel.

God’s will may take us into the eye of a storm. God’s will is not confirmed by the absence of adversity. God will accomplish His purposes even though it might appear that everything has gone awry. A.W Tozer once said,” It is doubtful that God ever used anybody great without first hurting him deeply.” It takes the test of trials to make us useful to God.

There will be times when things appear hopeless, and our dreams shattered. But we must not despair! Instead, we must cling to the precious promises of our great God that He will work all things for good to those who love God (Rom. 8:28).

The life of Joseph is important for us to study because it gives us the opportunity to understand and build on what he learned from God. It will be an encouragement to us as we see the victories he won and the trials he overcame.

We are all under God’s sovereign, guiding and protecting hand. Our lives will be impacted by the reality of this truth. We can see and learn from Joseph’s life the incredible truth that God rules and overrules in all circumstances of life. Joseph’s life story is great encouragement and reassurance as we walk this journey of faith. We sometimes wonder about God’s concern for us as we experience struggles of the past, the fears of our present, and the uncertainty of the future. We wonder if He is in control. And if so, what might we expect?

Joseph was born to save his family. The Genesis account from chapters 37 to 50 highlight that God had a blueprint for his life and for ours too. Someone mentioned that God used the brothers’ own hatred and murderous designs on Joseph for their good, Joseph’s good, Jacob’s good and the good of the entire nation of Israel. God will use what He wills for his own purposes. He even employs tensions and arguments amongst His people for those purposes. Nothing is out of His plan.

This God has a plan for your life.
