As Muslims commemorate the spirit of sacrifice and devotion this Eid al-Adha, may we all be reminded of the importance of compassion, humility, and humanity.

We shall continue creating brave spaces for respectful conversations, deeper understanding, and stronger connections across communities.

Wishing everyone celebrating a meaningful and blessed Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha..

Social cohesion is an important factor for peace and stability. Not just within Singapore but in the region. It starts with cross-cultural and interfaith understanding amidst diversity.

Last Monday (11 May), we hosted 23 undergraduate students studying Shari'ah in various fields, including family law and economics. They are from the State Islamic University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Malang, Indonesia. The students were accompanied by 4 Faculty members and lecturers.

The delegation was part of the final year Mobility Student Programme for international academic exposure and learning. We brought them to the Harmony in Diversity Gallery to learn about Singapore's multiculturalism and religious harmony. They also toured Telok Ayer Street, an iconic area where various religious communities co-exist as neighbours.

There are similarities with Malang. The city in East Java is a plural society with the predominant Muslim community living alongside significant Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Confucian communities. Like Singapore, religious tolerance and harmony are valued and places of worships co-exist in the city's shared spaces.

We hope to do a reciprocal visit to Malang to learn from our regional neighbours!

Thank you to Prof Umi Sumbulah, Dean of Shariah Faculty; Dr Risma Nur Arifah, Head of International Class Programme; Dr Erik Sabti Rahmawati, Head of Programme Study of Islamic Family Law; Dr Jundiani, Senior Lecturer; and students of UIN Malang for the stimulating exchanges.

Special thanks also to for the guided tour!

On this Good Friday, we pause to reflect on sacrifice, love, and redemption. May this solemn day remind us of the power of mercy, forgiveness, and hope.

Wishing you a meaningful and blessed Good Friday.

๐Ÿ–ผ : "The Crucifixion" by Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro), Italian, ca. 1420โ€“23.

@ The Met Museum

This early work by Fra Angelico, likely made for private devotion, accentuates the drama of Christโ€™s Crucifixion. In the foreground the Virgin collapses in grief, surrounded by the lamenting Mary Magdalen and Mary of Cleofas. Behind them, a band of Roman soldiers and their horses stand watch around the cross. Some men focus their gazes on Christ, while others exchange glances. The innovative circular composition was inspired by the bronze doors created by Lorenzo Ghiberti for the Baptistry of Florence. In its focus on spatial effects and convincing human emotion, this painting provides evidence of what would become Fra Angelicoโ€™s trademarks.

Our Fellow, Md Muazzam (Zam), represented Dialogue Centre in Suara's Eid celebration yesterday. Suara is a Malay/Muslim student group at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

The event, held at Jurong Spring Community Club, saw MP Dr. Hamid Razak as Jurong Spring's grassroots advisor, gracing the event.

This is Suara's inaugural Eid celebration. We are happy to be able to support this youth-led event.

Today, Dialogue Centre hosted students from Ryutsu Keizai University, Japan. They are currently studying sociology and intercultural studies. This was a 5-day study trip to learn about Singapore's multiculturalism.

The students visited Harmony in Diversity Gallery and went for a walking tour of the historic and multicultural area of Telok Ayer Street.

The students were accompanied by Professor Takashi Ichioka from the University's Faculty of Collaborative Regional Sociology. Prof Takashi is a familiar face in Singapore. He had done research on Singapore's diversity landscape.

After the tour, they had a dialogue where they learnt about the diversity in Southeast Asian region, the changing perceptions on Japan by Singaporeans, the positive role of religion in society, and the need for people-to-people diplomacy in today's challenging geopolitical landscape.

We hope such exchanges will further strengthen relations and deepen understanding through mutual learnings across societies.

Earlier this week (9 Mar), Dialogue Centre joined a meeting with the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP).

Together with interfaith partners, Harmony Centre, Being Bridges and Centre for Interfaith Understanding (CIFU), we met Rev Dr Yoshinori Shinohara, the Secretary-General of ACRP.

In attendance were Mr Lawrence Chong, Host Country Chairperson for ACRP Assembly 2026 (Singapore), and Mr Rawi Ahmed from Consulus.

The first ACRP was held in Singapore in November, 1976. This year is the 50th anniversary of ACRP. We look forward to an exciting programme and collaboration!

Last Friday (6 Mar), Dialogue Centre collaborated with .sg for an Interfaith Iftar. Participants learnt that fasting is a common practice in many faith traditions, although variations exist in the way fasting is observed, such as duration, abstention, and time of the year.

Six faith practitioners shared about fasting in their respective tradition: Susie Wong (Baha'i), Geshe Lobsang Yonten (Tibetan Buddhist), Francois Bretault (Catholic Christian), Anuradha (Hindu), Imran Taib (Sunni Muslim) and Ashish Patangiya (Jain).

Through the Human Library concept, participants delved into the diversity of religious traditions, as well as nuances across and within the faiths concerning fasting and other practices.

What emerged from the conversations were greater appreciation and deeper understanding, as well as new friendships forged. Many expressed that this event allowed them to know firsthand a faith tradition that they had not personally encountered before, especially the Baha'i Faith and Jainism.

This event had also surfaced commonalities such as the virtues of patience, self-restraint and compassion through the devotional practice of fasting.

Here's some fun-facts: the event happened on the first day of the Baha'i month of fasting (19 days), while the Muslims were entering the 16th day of Ramadan (Muslim fasting month). We are also in the Lent season---a season of fasting (from meat, typically, and on certain days, particularly Fridays) for many Christians.

Thank you to all participants who joined this meaningful event and for the active curiosity! We also thank the speakers for providing wonderful insights with openness and passion!

May we grown in our understanding and appreciation of the diverse and beautiful religious landscape we have in Singapore!

On Monday (2 Mar), Dialogue Centre hosted Ms Misako Shimotsuji, Ms Farah Ammar and Ms Anelise Tan from The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL). They were in Singapore to share about the work of The Japan Foundation and explore opportunities for collaborations and support for Japan-ASEAN partnerships and cultural exhanges. One key area looked at is interfaith and social cohesion.

The JFKL team was introduced to Singapore's interfaith landscape by Dialogue Centre's director, Mr Mohamed Imran. They had lively exhanges with invited representatives from various faith, interfaith and community organisations, and the academia. The team was also given a tour of the Harmony in Diversity Gallery that showcased Singapore's multiculturalism.

Thank you for visiting Singapore and we look forward to continuous cultural exhanges between Japan and Singapore to learn from each other's experiences in promoting peace and harmony!

On 9 Feb 2026, Wahid Foundation, in partnership with Temasek Foundation, held the "Harmony in Action: From Commitment to Collective Impactโ€ Awarding Ceremony via Zoom.

Md Muazzam (Zam) from Arts for Action (AFA) whom Dialogue Centre will be collaborating with, gave a speech representing the other two Singapore grantees: Lina Salim from Centre for Interfaith Understanding (CIFU); and Atiqah from Al-Mizan Singapore.

โ€œHarmony in Actionโ€ is a programme exploring the intersections of ecology, interfaith, and gender, taking place across Singapore and Indonesia from January to August 2026.

More details on the Singapore projects will be shared soon. For now, weโ€™ll leave you with this pantun (poem) to mark the significance of the cross-border ties between Singapore and Indonesia:
