Say like the Rotarians-“ Together, End Polio Now”
A Vision Born from Compassion, in 1979, Rotary embarked on a bold journey—one that began with a small vaccination project in the Philippines. What started as a modest initiative soon evolved into PolioPlus, a global campaign launched in 1985 with an audacious goal: to rid the world of poliomyelitis, a crippling and sometimes deadly disease that mainly affects children under the age of five.
Rotary’s fight against polio is more than a health campaign—it is a testament to the extraordinary power of togetherness. It proves that when humanity acts with compassion, coordination, and courage, even the most daunting challenges can be conquered.
Though the end is in sight now, Rotary reminds the world that “the last mile is the hardest.” Vigilance, funding, and continued collaboration remain essential to ensure that polio never returns. The lesson learned from this monumental effort extends beyond health—it demonstrates that global challenges, from climate change to poverty, can be tackled with the same spirit of synergy and solidarity.
The results are nothing short of historic. Since 1988, polio cases have been reduced by over 99.9%. More than 2.5 billion children have been immunized. The virus now remains endemic in just two countries and even there, the number of cases continues to fall each year.
This milestone is not merely about numbers; it symbolizes the triumph of persistence, cooperation, and hope. It shows how the power of unity can push humanity closer to a world free from suffering and disease. As the world edges closer to a polio-free future, the story of Rotary’s unwavering mission will forever inspire generations to believe that “alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.”
Today, 26th of October 2025- RC Singapore Heartlands joined in to carry the the flag of synergy, compassion and dedication by coming together to shout out- “ Together.. End Polio Now”
Many Thanks to DG Shahul Hameed and all the Rotarians.
