Last Saturday, Keat Hong Tiger went on a hike at Rainforest Wildlife Asia and Singapore Night Safari, where learning took place beyond the classroom. 🌳🐾
Our Cubs, organised in their Sixes, and Scouts, moving as one Patrol, began the day by exploring Southeast Asian rainforest ecosystems along trails, elevated walkways, and the Cavern. They learned how plants, animals, and decomposers maintain ecological balance, observed rock formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, and discovered how caves are formed ⛰️.
Throughout the visit, the Cubs and Scouts practised leadership and teamwork by taking on roles such as Sixer or Patrol Leader, Timekeeper, Booklet Recorder, Photographer, and Safety IC. These roles helped them develop communication skills, responsibility and care for one another as they moved through the park safely.
This experience reflected this year’s West Area theme:
“The patrol system is the heart of Scouting. It’s what sets us apart from everyone else, and when we use it well, success naturally follows.”
By working together in their Sixes and Patrol, the Cubs and Scouts supported one another and learned to lead and be led.
They observed and recorded animals 🐅🦘, identified plants such as Pandan and Pitcher Plants, and explored wildlife conservation, learning how human actions impact habitats and how organisations like Mandai protect endangered species.
After dinner, the adventure continued at the Night Safari 🌙🐘. Cubs explored four trails, identifying nocturnal animals while moving quietly and attentively. Scouts focused on observation, documenting endangered species such as the Sunda Pangolin 🐾 and studying marsupial adaptations ✏️📸. Both groups practised patience, awareness, and respect for wildlife.🦉🦇
It was a full day of learning and exploration. Through working in their Sixes and Patrols, the Cubs and Scouts strengthened teamwork, practised leadership, and had a better understanding of nature and conservation. 🌎❤️
