Be Kind SG

Be Kind SG Be Kind SG < 行善新加坡> envisions a kind & inclusive society for persons with disabilities. We also organize ad hoc kindness projects for various invisible needs.

We are an IPC Charity.
💜Be A Special Friend: Befriend PWDs (MWH)
💜Play.Able: Support children with play & learning activities
💜Seeds: Empower youths & caregivers We aim to enhance opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate actively in life, provide supporting activities and assistance to empower parents and caregivers of persons with disabilities and contribute to an inclusive soc

iety by promoting awareness of and educating the public about persons with disabilities. Currently, our programs include supporting adult disability homes and children and youths with special needs. Core Programs:

1. Be A Special Friend. We befriend adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism mainly in adult disability homes (Moral Welfare Home & THK Home for Disabled @ Sembawang) to reduce their feeling of isolation and connect them to the wider community. We visit them regularly and bring them for outings. We also hold this program for other communities.

2. Play.Able is a community project officially launched in 2021 to make play accessible to children with disabilities/special needs on a membership basis and support their development. We run a play and toy library for children with special needs. For those on our membership, we organize inclusive play activities, outings and family bonding events.

4. & Kindness Projects: We organize activities to craft items to gift people with disabilities from the adult disability homes and other communities. We also organize kindness projects for our 'less visible’ communities, focusing on the special needs communities. Founded in 2017. Our volunteering activities are non-profit, non-religious and non-political in nature. We are a registered non-profit volunteer-led group. UEN: 202133971G and have attained charity status in 2023. Huge thank you to the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre BAGUS Together team for inviting us to the 'Groundup Transit' programme. It was a privilege to share our journey of evolving from a groundup into a registered IPC charity.

During the session, we looked back at our roots—how we initially partnered with established charities, and how we now turn around to work with groundups like Volunteer Guitar Connection and Project Wellness who share our vision.

Truthfully, registering as a charity was never the original plan. The shift happened when we uncovered a critical gap in the disability sector and realized we were willing to commit years of sustained, long-term work to support families of children with disabilities.

Transitioning from a groundup to a formal charity is a heavy decision. It comes with significant compliance, heavy administrative governance, and changes in volunteer dynamics. When the weight of governance and fundraising feels daunting, it is always the encouraging words from the families we serve that keep our team grounded and moving forward.

For groundups considering this leap, we left the audience with three honest questions to ponder:

💡Does institutional bureaucracy or compromised authority bother you more?
💡What is the actual scale and timeline of your vision?
💡How do you intend to fund this work?

There is no single "correct" path. Groundups can absolutely remain as groundups while delivering deep impact, collaborate directly with charities, or pivot into models like social enterprises.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share our journey and a special thanks to Gabriel from The Legal Sauce for moderating the conversation, and Angela from Art and Grow Collective for being an inspiring co-panelist. 💜

[Be A Special Friend @ THK Sembawang: Joyful Crafts and Rhythms]

Today’s session was filled with creativity, movement, and wonderful music as we spent the morning with our friends at THK Sembawang.

To beat the warm weather, residents enjoyed making ice cream-themed crafts. Everyone had fun decorating their colourful creations, adding their own unique touches and designs.

The energy picked up with exercise songs including APT and Waka Waka. Residents joined in enthusiastically, moving along to the upbeat rhythms and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

We were delighted to have Volunteer Guitar Connection perform a selection of well-loved songs, including Stand By Me, Yellow, Yesterday Once More, and Beautiful Sunday. Residents sang along, tapped their feet, and enjoyed the familiar tunes together.

It was a joyful morning filled with creativity, exercise, and music. Thank you to Volunteer Guitar Connection and all our volunteers for making today’s session such a memorable one.

🧸 "Play is a human right. It is not optional, and it should not be used as a reward." 🧸

Today is the International Day of Play (11 June)—a beautiful reminder to protect, promote, and prioritize every child’s right to play.

Earlier this year, our team had the incredible opportunity to attend the International Toy Library Conference in Taipei. It was an eye-opening experience to see how different countries use toy libraries as a catalyst for social cohesion, inclusion, and community kindness.

Here are a few inspiring ideas from around the world that show how play brings people together:

Play as an Investment 🇦🇺: Research from Australia showed that every $1 invested in toy libraries returns an estimated $4.22 in social value to the community.

Accessible Play 🇺🇸: In Miami, public libraries store toys centrally and dispatch them across the city, allowing families to borrow toys just like books.

Shifting Minds 🇨🇴: A study from Colombia highlighted the ongoing journey to educate communities on why play is essential for a youth's well-being and development.

Inclusion for All 🇵🇹 🇹🇼: In Portugal, toy libraries act as inclusive community hubs. Meanwhile, Taiwan uses a "Play Certification System" with cute animal mascots (like the Yellow Rabbit Mark for the hearing impaired and the Red Pangolin Mark for multiple disabilities) to help families easily find inclusive toys.

We were also proud to share a piece of Singapore's heart! We presented a poster on how Play.Able supports community-based inclusive play and creates supportive employment pathways for neurodivergent youth. 💛

From learning about parent-coaching psychology to visiting the Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired, the conference reminded us that a kinder world starts with creating space for every child to play, laugh, and grow together.

How are you celebrating the power of play today? Let’s continue to build a more inclusive, playful, and kind society! 🌈✨

[Be A Special Friend @ Moral Welfare Home: Adapting and Connecting]

Our morning with our friends at Moral Welfare Home looked a bit different this time, but the shift in routine ended up making it one of our most meaningful sessions yet.

With the main hall undergoing renovations, we couldn't run our usual large-group program. Instead, we adapted our setup, shifting into the smaller communal spaces for a more decentralized morning of activities.

We spent the morning sitting side-by-side with the residents for cozy coloring sessions at smaller tables. The quieter environment allowed for focused, unhurried interactions.

We then took our music on the move, running mobile sing-alongs right within the communal spaces. Singing familiar songs in a close-knit, acoustic setting felt incredibly personal, bringing out bright smiles and creating a wonderfully warm atmosphere.

While the logistical constraints changed our usual workflow, stripping away the big hall setup turned out to be a blessing. It forced us to slow down and allowed for far more intimate, one-on-one connections with the residents.

Special thanks to:
🎤 Bernice & Estella for leading the singing
🏠 Moral Welfare Home staff for helping us navigate the space adjustments smoothly
