According to a recent report, the number of youth caregivers under 35 in MINDSibs, a support programme by MINDS for siblings of persons with special needs, has recently doubled from 160 to over 320. This rise is driven by declining fertility rates and an increase in special needs diagnoses.

This hit close to home for our team. We recently had an intern who has a sibling with special needs. While she isn't the primary caregiver, she at times sought alternative work arrangements to step up to support her sibling when her parents were busy. The maturity, reliability, and resilience she brought to work are likely a reflection of the responsibilities she shoulders for her sibling.

The news story is a reminder of the unseen responsibilities some young professionals carry today.

A new index being developed by Access Singapore and Milieu Insight arrives amid reports of slowing social mobility in Singapore, with a growing proportion of children from lower-income households struggling to climb the socio-economic ladder.

To help fix this, Access Singapore suggested giving young people more job guidance, mentors, and second chances to succeed. At the same time, major bank Morgan Stanley joined them to help close this gap, as people push for everyone to have equal access to helpful networks.

A heartfelt thank you to Renee Chong from MangaChat for warmly hosting a group of students from Westwood Secondary School.

During the session, Renee helped students better understand emotions and how to manage them in healthy ways. She also shared her personal and professional journey, offering honest reflections and encouragement to inspire students as they think about their own paths ahead.

We would also like to thank Sean Tan from NUS Enterprise for sharing more about the ecosystem at BLOCK71 Social Impact Hub, giving students a glimpse into the wider world of innovation, entrepreneurship and social impact.

We are grateful for partners like Renee and Sean, who take the time to create meaningful learning moments for young people and remind them that growth, resilience and self-belief are all part of the journey.

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) benefit significantly from regular exercise, as shown by Ms. Siti Nurshahidah's active participation in running clubs and gym sessions. Mr. Samuel Lim launched his inclusive fitness program with seven PWDs and has since expanded his classes to support 30 PwDs with a focus on ages 20 to 60.

Focusing on visually impaired PWDs, he aims to build their confidence through specialized fitness routines, hoping more commercial gyms open their doors to PWDs. By adapting equipment and training methods, the initiative advocates for a more inclusive landscape where health and community support are accessible to everyone.

With shrinking family sizes in Singapore, it is crucial for children to have widened support networks. Mr Keith Magnus, council chairman of Families for Life, noted while helming the upcoming National Family Festival (NFF) that he hopes the movement will embrace an expanded family archetype to provide this critical network.
Mr Magnus advocates for strong families to turn outwards and support others to foster greater social cohesion, preventing Singapore from becoming a selfish society. Additionally, the NFF campaign seeks to encourage employers to adopt family-friendly cultures while initiating open conversations with parents about the joys and hardships of parenting.
