A Classic Legacy Spanning Half a Century: The Arrogant Little White Rabbit Returns with Additional Performances in Oct 2026.
An Entertaining and Educational Chinese Children’s Theatre Experience in High Demand
In 2026, Arts Theatre of Singapore’s Chinese children’s drama The Arrogant Little White Rabbit once again sparked an enthusiastic response from audiences. Tickets for all five performances originally scheduled for 3 and 4 October at the SOTA Studio Theatre were sold out within less than a week of going on sale.
In response to the overwhelming support from parents and children, Arts Theatre of Singapore has added three additional performances on 10 and 11 October at Stamford Arts Centre (SAC). Only a limited number of tickets remain for these additional shows, demonstrating the enduring appeal of this classic children’s production.
The Origins of a Classic: From a Soviet Children’s Story to the Singapore Stage
The Arrogant Little White Rabbit is adapted from a classic children’s story by Soviet writer Sergey Mikhalkov. The renowned Chinese theatre practitioner Sun Weishi, the adopted daughter of Premier Zhou Enlai, later translated and adapted the story into a Chinese-language children’s play, giving the work a rich theatrical heritage.
The history of this production in Singapore also reflects part of the development of local Chinese-language theatre.
As early as the 1970s, Arts Theatre of Singapore presented the story as part of variety programmes featuring short plays, songs and dances, under the direction of the theatre’s founder, Mr Cheng Minwei.
The actor who played the Wolf at the time immersed himself so deeply in the role that, even after the performance, the director jokingly remarked that he still carried the “scent of the wolf” with him. The anecdote reflects the dedication and professionalism that the actors brought to their characters even in those early years.
From 1997, Arts Theatre of Singapore developed the work into a standalone 60-minute children’s production. It has since been performed extensively in schools and warmly received by teachers and students. The production was also featured by Lianhe Zaobao in 2017. In 2023, it travelled beyond Singapore to perform at a theatre festival in Nanning, China, where it was also well received.
Learning Through Theatre: Discovering Life Lessons Through Interaction
The Arrogant Little White Rabbit tells the story of a little white rabbit whose pride and arrogance lead to a series of challenges and lessons.
Through a lively and engaging storyline, professional theatrical production, and close interaction between the performers and young audience members, children are encouraged to connect with and enjoy the colourful animal characters while learning through laughter.
The production combines education with entertainment, gently conveying important values such as humility, friendship, caring for others and helping one another. It offers children an enjoyable theatrical experience while encouraging positive character development.
Recommended for children aged 3 and above.
A Timeless Children’s Classic
A good children’s play can plant the seeds of truth, kindness and beauty in a child’s heart.
After more than half a century, The Arrogant Little White Rabbit continues to delight new generations of young audiences. With only a limited number of tickets remaining for the additional performances, parents are encouraged to take this final opportunity to bring their children to the theatre for a memorable family experience filled with laughter, imagination and meaningful life lessons.
