Homeless Hearts of Singapore

Stories of our homeless and stay-out friends in Singapore... and also stories of God's amazing love

We are a team of volunteers who hope to inspire and start movements of fellow Singaporeans to start their own small homeless outreach groups likewise. Just two or three, can already, who will take time to see - and stop for the one in need. HHOS is a secular outreach based on Christian values (as the co-founders are Christians). But it’s open to all - regardless of race, language or religion. So we hope to help them in whatever ways possible, whether advocating for them, or befriending, or ministering to them - both to the homeless and those who have houses but are homeless in heart. Thus, our team takes a relational approach in helping the homeless, and help them find and get to the relevant social services. We also enjoy partnering with fellow like-minded and like-hearted community partners who care for our homeless friends too. Stop for the ONE in need – that's our motto and modus operandi! So do feel free to PM us any articles or tip-offs of any homeless people in Singapore, and we'll do our best to visit them! :)

We are always so grateful for our friends from NUS College of Alice & Peter Tan (CAPT) College of Alice & Peter Tan for volunteering with us and for bringing joy and friendships to our homeless friends as part of their Community Engagement Festival every year! Through these experiences and collaborations, not only does it help to raise awareness to the NUS CAPT students but it also brings different perspectives and conversations to our homeless friends and volunteers. It's always heartwarming to see how the students care for our homeless friends and how our younger generation is involved! :) 🙏🏻

We organised a dinner gathering with our homeless friends on World Homeless Day and it was really nice to just have a chill and relaxing time with our homeless friends, enjoying good food and good time with them, singing Karaoke to English, Mandarin, Malay and Hokkien songs together and there were volunteers who did art with some of our homeless friends. We also heard an inspiring story of an ex-homeless friend of how he was rough sleeping and he went into a place to seek help and he has found a place to stay. We had homeless friends of all ages joining our event, from homeless youths, to families to transgenders and to the elderly and it was heartwarming to see how everyone gathered together regardless of backgrounds and to eat together and enjoy our event together! :) 🙏🏻

We are always very happy to share about homelessness and homeless befriending with the younger generation because they have so much potential to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive community for our homeless friends and it all starts from their homes and communities, such as their friends, schoolmates, parents, siblings, neighbours and interest groups.

We don't need them to do big things such as getting our homeless friends a place to stay but the important thing is for them to be more aware of homelessness and how they can keep a look out for the well-being and safety of our homeless friends among their communities and how they can offer a listening ear and safe place to them to share their struggles and seek informal support.

Homelessness is not a problem to be solved but they are people to be loved! :) 🙏🏻

We are so grateful that Minister Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State Goh Pei Ming and our friends from MSF, HDB and PA for joining our outreach recently to befriend and support our homeless friends!

It's really nice to hear how they are so kind and supportive to our homeless friends and volunteers. They learnt about their stories, provided a listening ear, and see how they could resolve the barriers that stop them from getting stable housing and they expedite support for them if they need. They are always so enthusiastic and passionate to support our homeless friends and this is not their first time joining us!

Most importantly, it's nice to see how they are trying to create more resources and support such as shelters and making positive changes to the current landscape and policies based on the needs of our homeless friends so that more of our homeless friends can be supported and they have access to more support and resources. Identifying any potential gaps or challenges and seeing how we can improve the existing systems.

At the end of the day, it's not about bringing everyone off the streets but it's about creating a sense of community and friendships for our homeless friends and creating more resources and support for them so that they feel safe at where they are and they would always have somewhere safe to turn to if they need any support!

It was another triple happiness for our homeless friends as we celebrated the birthdays of 3 homeless friends whose birthdays all fall within the same week and only a few days apart. It's beautiful to see how our homeless friends are so happy for one another even though they may not really know one another before! :) 🙏🏻

As today (10 Oct) is World Homeless Day, we would like to appreciate our amazing volunteers for always being there for our homeless friends, supporting them and journeying with them! We would also like to appreciate our amazing homeless friends who always inspire us with their resilience, courage, strength, resourcefulness, gratitude, and kindness, through their lived experiences and stories, through our interactions with them and through how they treat others around them, which are often filled with compassion and gratitude. We can always learn so many important lessons from our volunteers and homeless friends and that's why it's not always about giving, but it's also about how we can learn and grow so much as fellow human beings whenever we volunteer and we befriend our homeless friends! :) 🙏🏻

Special shout-out to all of our amazing partners who have made our work possible and for always believing in our homeless friends and the work that we do! :) 🙏🏻

It was double happiness for our homeless friend as we celebrated her housewarming and also her birthday together! Despite her young age, she has been through a lot, a lot of hardships and heartbreaks. But she has also been so resilient and courageous to overcome all her obstacles in life and she not only has a house but she has also found a job! :) 🙏🏻

It was a really heartwarming moment when one of our homeless friends shared that he would be going to an alcohol rehabilitation centre the following week during one of our Community Evening dinners and he was very grateful for us and our other homeless friends whom he met the past few months. It was even heartwarming when our other homeless friends were all happy for him and wished him well for his alcohol rehabilitation. It's always nice to see how our homeless friends share a common bond and they are always so supportive of one another, and they generally are rooting for one another! :) 🙏🏻

Homeless Befriending 101

Conducted via zoom (zoom details will be sent to you nearer to the course date)

In this course, we will be sharing:
- tips and strategies on how to engage and befriend our homeless friends when you meet them outside
- do's and don'ts of befriending
- homelessness and the housing/shelter landscape in Singapore
- helpful resources relevant to homeless befriending

These skills and knowledge will be useful for anyone, even if you do not volunteer with us as you can use these skills and knowledge when you meet a homeless friend outside.

There will also be a Q&A session where you can ask us questions about homeless befriending.
