Basic Principles of Yoga

Proper Food

What we eat really affects our minds and body. Eating in moderation only when we are hungry, taking time to chew food properly, and having a positive attitude to food and its preparation. Bad eating habits can cause obesity, diabetes, and increase certain risk factors for stroke, heart disease, cancer, and other health issues. We are what we eat.

Proper Exercise - Asana

Yoga practice strengthens the body, improves circulation, helps with flexibility, and stimulates the endocrine system. The more we practice, the more strength we gain, the more flexible we become, and the better our immune system will be.

Breathing – Pranayama

Every single cell in our body needs oxygen and we all know that breathing is a natural reflexive action. Most of us go about our daily routine without being mindful of our breathing. We come into the world as good breathers; inhaling and exhaling from our abdomens, however, over time, we unlearn this process due to adverse external influences such as stress and anxiety, our breaths become shallow and fast. Through Yoga and mindful breathing, we will relearn that slow, deep breathing allows the abdomen to expand bringing into the lungs the amount of oxygen needed to nourish all the cells of the body. It also slows down the heart rate, relaxes muscles, and calms the mind. When our breath is calm, our mind will be calm and our postures will be still and stable.

Relaxation – Savasana

Due to our modern lifestyle, we are always chasing after deadlines and we tend to measure by how much we achieve at the least amount of time. This causes our mind and body in a constant working mode, this will actually make us feel burnout over time. When the mind and body are constantly overworked, their natural function and performance significantly decrease. On the other side, an enormous amount of healing takes place when we relax and restore. As such, it is important to schedule a downtime for our mind and body to relax and rejuvenate

Positive thinking and Meditation

Having to put the negative thoughts aside helps to gain clarity in our thinking and we will be able to see our strenghts and weakness more realistically and clearly. Our perceptions in life change when we shift our thinking from negative to positive.

Yin Yoga Monday
Every Monday : 7:45pm (LIVE Streaming on Zoom)

Yin Yoga is not as active, intense or dynamic as Vinyasa Yoga or other Yang type of yoga.

Yin yoga focuses on deep connective tissues like our fascia, ligaments and joints. It is a slow paced sequences that allow us the space to turn inward, tune into our mind and body and the physical sensation of our body while Yang type of Yoga focuses on our muscles and strength.

The practice of Yin Yoga is based on Ancient Chinese philosophy and Taoist principles which believe there are pathways of Qi(energy) running through our body. We are opening up any blockages and allow the energy to flow freely by stretching and deepening into poses.

Yin also offering the opportunity to slow down, to calm our mind and to cultivate gratitude for our body.

A lot of us are living in a Yang (active ) type of lifestyle and leaves very little time to foster the quiet and introspective side. This can be physically, mentally or emotionally overwhelming over time. By slowing down and through yin practice, it helps to bring back the equilibrium in our body and mind.
