On 5 August, we had the privilege of engaging around 360 students from Year 5 and Year 6 at NUS High School of Mathematics and Science in discovering the heart of meaningful service.
Led by our Acting Executive Director, Ms Pauline Chew-Tan, the session explored some of Singapore's pressing community needs and social issues, while encouraging students to reflect on how they can shift from a "We First" to a "We Serve" mindset.
As we approach Singapore's National Day, students were encouraged to look beyond their immediate social circles and recognise that every individual has the power to make a difference. Together, these collective actions can create meaningful and lasting impact for our communities and our nation.
During the session, Ms Pauline emphasised the importance of sustained community engagement in addressing social challenges. She shared how dedicated, consistent, and regular volunteering efforts can create deeper and more meaningful outcomes within Singapore's social service landscape.
Volunteering not only transforms the lives of beneficiaries but also shapes the volunteers themselves. It encourages a shift from a "hero mindset" to one of mutual learning, humility, and genuine human connection, where both volunteers and beneficiaries inspire and learn from one another.
Beyond community service, volunteering also nurtures values such as patience, empathy, and resilience, while developing essential life skills including communication, leadership, and adaptability. Through heartfelt testimonials shared by our volunteers, students gained a glimpse into how volunteering has shaped their personal growth. These stories are a powerful affirmation of our commitment to developing compassionate youth who will become the future pillars of Singapore.
We are also excited to share with the students that Heartware Network provides meaningful volunteering opportunities that enable youths to build deeper connections with the communities they serve. Through sustained engagement, they can create lasting impact while growing into caring, resilient, and purpose-driven leaders.
