SIFA Singapore IATSS Forum Alumni (SIFA) comprises past participants from Singapore who have proudly represented Singapore in the IATSS Forum Program in Japan.

Our vision is - "Connecting Communities, Within and Beyond". Founded in 1985, the IATSS Forum provides a place where young professionals can gather. Inviting young and outstanding individuals from respective ASEAN countries, the Forum provides opportunities for participants to understand each others' countries through seminars, field studies, group study, and cultural exchanges, as well as to make

efforts to solve current issues in the ASEAN region and Japan, under the motto "Thinking and Learning Together." The Singapore IATSS Forum Alumni (SIFA) comprises participants who have attended the IATSS Forum in Japan. It is a platform for sharing experiences and offers support for new batches going for the 55-day programme. It is also for participants who have gained rich experiences and want to contribute back to society.

This December, all around various countries in Southeast Asia and India, interviews are ongoing for the 69th and 70th batch of the IATSS FORUM!

Along with Midori-san and Haruka-san who flew in from Japan, supported by the NUSS Secretariat, we have recently concluded the interview for Singapore's candidates! πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬

This year, 15 applicants were shortlisted to 8 for the group interview - a mix of NGO practitioners, private-sector professionals, independent founders, and one public-sector candidate.

We look forward to welcoming and orientating our new friends soon!

Last week, we attended the 11th IATSS Forum International Alumni Meeting (IAM) at Suzuka Circuit! 🌏✨

The IAM is held once every three years, and some of you may remember that SIFA hosted the last one online during COVID-19.

After different country alumni associations presented their plans, we joined lively discussion groups to explore new ideas and potential collaborations across themes of economic development, mental health, youth leadership, circular economy and climate action (and more!). It was great to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new ones who share the same spirit.

Amid the 40th anniversary celebrations, we also attended the reopening of the South Building - a place that many alumni may fondly recall as their second home during their time in Japan.

We return home with renewed energy and ideas for deeper collaboration! A gathering in December is in the works, and we look forward to sharing more updates and reconnecting with everyone as 2026 comes to a close. 🌟

Stay tuned!

Konbawa! Some of us are back in Suzuka, Japan πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ˜ We're here for the 40th anniversary celebration of IATSS Forum and the International Alumni Meeting (IAM) 😊 We also sat in for the presentations of the 68th batch Group Study, where we felt encouraged to hear their ideas.

It's good to reconnect with old and new friends. We're looking forward to this coming weekend. Stay tuned!

Hi everyone, Rachel here from the 68th batch of IATSS FORUM! πŸ‘‹πŸΌ

Checking in from Suzuka as we begin the final stretch of our journey: the Group Study! It’s hard to believe six weeks have already flown by. The weather’s getting chilly, the leaves are turning red, and the programme is shifting into a new season.

While Japan has long been a popular destination for many Singaporeans, it’s actually my first time here. Looking back, I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to travel across different prefectures and cities (from urban hubs to quiet rural towns) and for all the moments that have shaped this experience.

My reflections so far have often drawn parallels between Singapore and Japan, our responsibility towards the ASEAN region as a collective community, and what it means to practice leadership with care and courage in times of uncertainty.

I’m especially cherishing new friendships, and the awe of seeing how people and places evolve together.

What has stuck with me:

πŸ§’πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸ» Walking through Kamishima Island in Toba led by children as our 'Shimakko' guides taught me that revitalising rural areas facing depopulation is not just about infrastructure, but about nurturing belonging and developing a sense of pride among the community's future generations. As Hui Ying would put it, "Connection is social infrastructure". ❀️

πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸ·β™»οΈ Visiting the Tohoku region (North of Japan) and witnessing how bold leadership and communities have come together to rebuild their towns after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

One of the most inspiring stops was a local winery in Minamisanriku; instead of competing for survival, the owner built an ecosystem of collaboration, linking local producers, fisheries, craftspeople to boost tourism across different towns.

In another town Rikuzen-takata, we visited a community centre made possible by donations from Singapore after the disaster, complete with a tiny Merlion replica out front (what a lovely surprise!). The trip to Tohoku reminds me to keep finding and sharing the often-hidden beauty in our own island home.

πŸ—»πŸš Our Mount Fuji trip last weekend organised by JIFA and Advanced Soft! Alumni from Japan drove us, treated us to onigiri for dinner, and hosted a hilarious Bingo game on the ride back. I’ll never forget the warmth and generosity, and I hope we will have a chance to reciprocate some day soon. γ©γ†γ‚‚γ‚γ‚ŠγŒγ¨γ†, Nagi-san and team! πŸ™πŸ»

(And of course, all the adventures on our Self Development Days, endless matcha ice-cream, walking over 20,000 steps each day, and shopping at Donki! 😜)

With this year marking IATSS’ 40th anniversary, I’m looking forward to meeting some of you in person soon and to stay connected as part of this alumni community in years to come.

What’s your favourite IATSS memory? I’d love to hear yours! πŸ’¬

Hello! It's been almost three years since we last posted. How are you?

The Singapore IATSS Forum Alumni (SIFA) is made up of those who went to Japan for the IATSS Forum since the 1990s. That means it's been over.. 35 years!

IATSS FORUM will be celebrating its 40 anniversary this year and some of us will be heading to Suzuka, Japan soon to participate in the IATSS Forum International Alumni Meeting (IAM). Before we look forward to the time to reflect on our shared journey and cultivate further friendships and future collaborations, here's sharing some photos over the past year of catching up with SIFA folks, including volunteering with Singapore Heritage Society, Singapore Land Authority and Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)! We even had dear Midori-san and Gaki-san in Singapore to visit and conduct the applicant interviews last year πŸ₯°

We'll also be using this space to hear more from Rachel Cheang, our current 68th batch representative from Singapore who is thinking and learning together with her dear friends from across Asia. Stay tuned to hear her reflections from Japan, as a Singaporean!
