This month's fireside chat 'Compassion in Action: A Volunteer’s Role in Spiritual Support' was truly inspiring. Dr. Neo Han Yee systematically explained spiritual suffering using the Five Aggregates framework, helping us better understand the spiritual needs of patients and caregivers. From the physical body to the mind, from personal roles to life’s meaning, every step was filled with practical insight.

Sometimes, Hope Arrives with a Mahjong Set.

Every visit is a reminder: You are not alone.

When TCN Volunteers visit Mr Ng, they don’t just come to play mahjong. They bring something far more meaningful: Time, Friendship and Joy.

Living with serious illness has changed many parts of Mr Ng’s life. But when the mahjong tiles are laid out, his face lights up. He laughs, jokes and concentrates on every move. For a little while, illness takes a back seat, replaced by connection and happiness.

TCN had the joy of celebrating Mr Ng’s 90th birthday with him. It was a simple but meaningful moment, another reminder that birthdays, laughter and shared moments are worth celebrating.

For his daughter, Eileen, these visits are equally precious. As the primary caregiver for both her elderly parents, the responsibilities can feel overwhelming. Our volunteers offer her a listening ear, companionship and a reminder that she doesn’t have to walk this journey alone.

Sometimes, support looks like a conversation.
Sometimes, it looks like simply being there.
And sometimes, it looks like a game of mahjong.

These moments may seem small, but to a patient and caregiver, they can mean the world.

A Night of Respite & Connection

A heartfelt thank you to our partners , .wills and Advance Planning Pte Ltd for providing complimentary tickets for our caregivers and volunteers to enjoy a special screening of Dear Me.

For caregivers, finding time for themselves can often be challenging. Going for a movie is a rare opportunity for them to step away from their caregiving responsibilities, take a breather, and simply enjoy an evening out.

The Teochew-language film created a sense of connection and familiarity, making the evening especially meaningful for our caregivers.

“The main character in the movie took care of a family she hasn’t met in person, and silently, without fanfare. That’s what resonated with me.” shared Mr Lee, a TCN volunteer who shares the value of looking out for others and doing good.

Bereaved caregiver Joanne also shared her experience as a caregiver for both her parents spanning a total period of nine years, and the audience applauded her for her devotion. She also encouraged everyone to live well, and committed to living well, in the days ahead.

We believe that caring for caregivers is just as important as caring for those they look after. Respite may be a small pause, but sometimes, that pause is exactly what a caregiver needs to recharge and continue their journey.

This National Day, let’s honour the generation who built our Singapore.

They worked hard, raised families, built communities, and laid the foundation for the home we proudly share today.

Today, many of them are living with serious illness, frailty, and the challenges of ageing. But living well is still possible — through comfort, connection, dignity, and moments of meaning shared with the people they love.

At The Compassionate Network, we support seniors, family caregivers, and loved ones in ways that help them live well, even in the midst of illness and caregiving. From home visits and outings to special celebrations, grief support, and practical care, we walk alongside families so they can hold on to joy, togetherness, and hope.

Your donation can help create these moments of living well. Every gift, no matter the amount, helps bring relief, warmth, and compassionate support to families who need it most.

· $50 supports materials used during meaningful home visit activities.

· $100 funds one wheelchair-accessible transport trip for a senior.

· $200 supports legacy-building experiences, family celebrations, and caregiving aids.

· $1,500 helps provide a family with a year of home visits, outings, special occasions, and grief and bereavement support.

This year, through our "With You All The Way – Living Well" fundraising campaign, we hope to reach even more families facing the challenges of serious illness.

"You don't feel so alone in life when you know someone is there for you."

That is something Albert Tan has come to believe after years of volunteering with The Compassionate Network.

Since joining TCN in 2023, Albert has been journeying alongside families caring for loved ones with serious illness. Through regular home visits, heartfelt conversations over a cup of tea and simply showing up, he has seen how the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.

One moment, in particular, has stayed with him.
"A caregiver once told me, 'Thank you for coming. You're the only visitor I've had this month.' I'll never forget those words."

Albert recalls supporting one family who had spent years caring for an elderly. The caregiver rarely left the house and often felt exhausted and isolated. Visit after visit, Albert was there to listen without judgement, offering a listening ear and gentle encouragement. As trust grew, so did the caregiver's confidence to share not only the struggles, but also the little moments of hope along the way.

"Sometimes people don't need us to solve their problems," Albert says. "They just need someone willing to sit with them and listen."

What makes Albert's journey even more special is that he shares it with his wife, who also volunteers with TCN. Together, they have quietly touched the lives of many families while inspiring others to step forward and serve. It was this spirit of building connections, mentoring new volunteers and bringing people together that earned Albert TCN's Super Networker Award last year.

For Albert, volunteering isn't about doing something extraordinary. "It's about showing up consistently. When someone knows they haven't been forgotten, it can mean the world."

We are grateful for the participation and meaningful discussions shared by participants from healthcare and community organisations, as well as our dedicated volunteers, throughout the evening.

Today, let us cherish the fathers and father figures who have shaped our lives through their love, strength, and sacrifice.

This photo reminds me of my dad, who worked as a coolie at Raffles Quay in his younger days, carrying heavy loads under the hot sun to support our family and give us a better future.

As I grew older, I came to appreciate not only the weight he carried on his shoulders, but also the love and responsibility he carried in his heart.

To those whose fathers are still with them, cherish every moment. To those whose fathers live on in memory, may their love and legacy remain forever close to your heart.
