The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund

The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund To reach out to every child in need and provide them with the resources to do well in school The Fund supports more than 10,000 children and youth a year.

The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund started in 2000 as a community project initiated by The Straits Times to provide pocket money to children from low-income families to help them through school. The children can use this money for school-related expenses, such as buying a meal during recess, paying for transport or using it to meet other schooling needs. The financial help also eases the b

urden of the many parents who are already struggling to feed their families on their meagre incomes. Since the project started in 2000, the Fund has disbursed more than $90m and helped over 200,000 cases of children and youth in providing them with monthly school pocket money. STSPMF was established as a Trust on 20 October 2010 with a Board of Trustees and was granted charity status on 14 November 2011 with Institution of A Public Character (IPC) status effective from 1 January 2012. Since its inception as a community project to its transition to a full-fledged charity, The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund has been working closely with its strategic partner, the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). On 7 October 2016, STSPMF annnounced its partnership with MOE and all mainstream schools. Students from low-income families will be able to apply for the school pocket money fund in their schools.

We are grateful to Youth Guidance Outreach Services (YGOS) for sharing the stories behind STSPMF's work and bringing attention to the challenges faced by students and their families.

Through stories like these, we are reminded that financial assistance goes beyond supporting a child's daily school needsโ€”it can also bring relief and peace of mind to families navigating difficult circumstances.

Thank you to YGOS for helping to shine a light on these experiences.

Our beneficiaries had an enriching day at the Journey of Hope event organised by Mu Gua Media. Through hands-on activities, they learned the art of storytelling and gained valuable skills in creating their own podcasts and videos.

A heartfelt thank you to Mu Gua Media for curating this workshop and equipping our students with the knowledge and resources to express themselves with confidence.

We are deeply grateful to the family of the late Mr Sim Wong Hoo for their generous donation to STSPMF. This reflects the family's commitment in carrying forward Mr Sim's legacy of giving and supporting needy children and youths.

Mr Sim was not only a entrepreneur who put Singapore on the global technology map, but also a firm believer in helping those in need.

Thank you for honouring Mr Sim's legacy and helping us provide every child with the resources to do well in school and beyond.

Joshua George is raising funds to support low-income children, a cause close to his heart shaped by what he witnessed growing up.

When he was a student, he noticed some classmates using meal coupons during recess but didnโ€™t fully understand why. Over time, he came to realise that these coupons helped students who might otherwise struggle to afford food. That experience stayed with him, reinforcing his belief that every child deserves something as basic as a proper meal in school.

Hunger is a distracting barrier to effective learning. A small donation from you can make a meaningful difference, ensuring that students have the energy they need to focus and thrive.
