Boon Lay Nature Garden Transforming parkland into biodiverse garden and forest for humans and wildlife. A project by Foodscape Collective's network

Boon Lay Nature Garden is a communal experiential sustainable gardening plot in Jurong Central Park. Initiated by Foodscape Collective's network with the support of NParks, it is a sandbox where people experiment with regenerative practices to shape biodiverse habitats for humans and wildlife. Coordinating volunteer group update NParks and set guidelines for regulars to work with.

Earlier this week, a school's nature club came by to Jurong Central Park for a storytelling session. The story, The Three Hungry Microbes', is a newly published picture book co-authored by (regular) Cuifen Pui and Dorcas Tang. It is inspired by community composting efforts in Singapore, as well as Boon Lay Nature Garden.

After storytime, the students did some nature journaling. The resident iguana walked by, and caught the attention of many! We understand that the iguana was formerly a pet.

The students were also very interested in the plants and insects in the garden. We 'oohed' and 'ahhed' with the students. By the time they left, the garden looked a lot prettier and magical!

Boon Lay Nature Garden is a communal experiential gardening space. With the support of NParks, our volunteers are co-creating a vision of biodiverse habitats which include a wildlife forest, food forest, edible meadow, rain garden, and more. We welcome schools, other organisations, and individuals to join us in making this a reality.

BLNG is an initiative coordinated by an informal group of volunteers from Foodscape Collective. If you'd like to organise a customised session similar to the one above, reach out to our education partners in Foodscape Collective's network to ask for a proposal and quote:

A group of researchers from NUS Environment Research Institute, NUS Office of Vice President (Research & Tech), TU Berlin, and civil servants from Singapore Food Agency, visited Jurong Central Park this morning.

They are participants of a symposium on biomass waste valorisation. (We learned from them that composting and mulching are considered valorisation too!)

Regulars Yong Liang, Cuifen, and Hanzhong welcomed them to BLNG's project space, and also brought them to the other community-centric gardens in the park.

Recently, in August, we made a new batch of compost with a specific purpose in mind - to prep the ground for a new growing project.

More details about the project in future posts 😉

(Compost-making was one of the first priorities at BLNG when it started in 2019. It has persisted to this day, with “generations” of volunteers continuing and evolving the practice, even as individuals came and went. Proud of that 😙)

This is a Foodscape Collective project. The sessions we list on the poster are led by regular volunteers.

If you are looking for a paid customised activity at the garden, please reach out to educational companies in the Collective's network (Food Citizen or Living Soil Asia).

If there's value alignment, they may quote for services delivered by their trained professionals, which may include spending some time in the garden.

Located in a neighbourhood park, Boon Lay Nature Garden is a unique experimental communal regenerative gardening space. We are working towards edible meadow, food forest, wildlife forest, amphibian habitat and more.

Our community are the humans and wildlife. No plant is a w**d although we do take out plants to cultivate ecological succession and a more biodiverse garden.

We focus on the forgotten or lesser known plants, and try to source for plants in natural habitats around Singapore or the region.

The project is volunteer-driven and coordinated by a small team.

Our regular volunteers are usually available to welcome members of the public on Thursday or Sunday mornings. Follow us to see the monthly schedule for communal activities!

BLNG is in a public park. Every day, the public parks' cleaning contractors would sweep and gather fallen leaves, bag them, and leave them at one corner of the park for disposal.

As much as we feel that our City in Nature would be a healthier place if we let fallen leaves be on grassland or exposed soil, there is only so much we can do when we are volunteers and not part of the park decision-making or operations team.

We are grateful that when we make friends with the park cleaners, most of them would allow us to take some bags over to BLNG for composting or mulching. Some would go out of their way to trolley them over.

Some would tell us which bags had a lot of litter, and which bags had fallen leaves which had broken down.

Some also shared with us their composting tips. Do you know that you can get good compost from just fallen leaves and cut grass?

We are grateful to receive more bags of partially broken down leaves today!

This morning, teachers from Jiang Education Centre brought a small group of students to help out in the garden and have a chat about food sustainability. They were guided by Cuifen, a regular and member of the coordinating group.

A teacher expressed surprise that harvests at this garden are not sold, and the edible harvests at this garden are not intended to help dent the implicit amount of locally grown food in the nation's 30 by 30 goal.

BLNG is an experimental project where with the support of NParks, interested residents and regenerative practitioners get to pilot ecological ideas that are relatively new to Singapore. The efforts of everyone, including today's group, add towards a long-term vision.

We plant regional and climate-appropriate plants that provide food and habitat for humans and wildlife.

BLNG is accessible by park visitors 24/7. While we allow park visitors to harvest some leaves and flowers for their own cooking, we urge everyone to do so mindfully - leave the garden better than you found it, and leave some harvests for others.

Recently, Tang Hung Bun was featured by Quiet Strength on how he tries his best to save fish, plants, and even sand from the stream at the former Ground-up Initiative location, so that they have a chance to do well.

Mr Tang was key to help start this garden project at Boon Lay. In more recent months, he has helped start Singapore's first Permaculture Learning Centre at 785 Yishun Ave 2.
