Pain goes far beyond the physical. For terminally ill patients, psychological, social and spiritual challenges can weigh just as heavily.

This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we stand alongside our palliative care partners to highlight that pain management is not a luxury, but the foundation of compassionate care. While healthcare professionals work tirelessly to manage physical symptoms, our dedicated volunteers step in to offer a hand to hold, bringing reassurance and moments of gentle connection through the fulfilment of wishes.

One Moon, 87 Years, Four Generations

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival has always been a treasured family tradition for Mdm Low and her loved ones. But this year, things were a little different. With Mdm Low’s health declining and her hospitalisation, the family wondered if they would still be able to continue a tradition they had shared for so many years.

On 26 September, four generations of the family came together once more to keep that tradition alive.

With the help of our AWS volunteers, Caral, Liana, Genevieve and Jason, the hospital activity room was transformed with colourful lanterns, starry lights and music. Most important of all, the heart of every Mid-Autumn celebration: mooncakes and pomelos.

Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Mdm Low was able to spend the evening in the warmth of those closest to her. Amid the playful antics and familiar chatter of her family, smiles could be seen lighting up her face.

One small surprise made the evening even more special for Mdm Low: a rabbit lantern. As Mdm Low herself was born in the Year of the Rabbit, being able to celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, which is deeply associated with the rabbit in the moon, was a moment she cherished.

The celebrations came to a close with a touching moment when the family gathered around Mdm Low and sang 《老鼠爱大米》, a heartfelt expression of their love for the mom, ahma, and zhorzhor at the heart of their family.

For Mdm Low and her family, perhaps this Mid-Autumn moon shines a little brighter than all the ones before it.

Watching four generations gathered around her mother, Mdm Low’s daughter, Yvonne, shared with the AWS team: “My prayer was answered.”

As a gesture of appreciation, she presented the team with a specially handmade thank you letter expressing just how much the evening had meant to the family.

“A photo captures a moment, but a memorable one tells a story.”

Ron first came across Ambulance Wish Singapore when a friend, who was volunteering with us, asked if he could help photograph a wish. Knowing that it was for a good cause, Ron readily agreed.

His first wish brought him to Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome, where he helped capture precious moments for Ms Tan*, a 20-year-old patient, and her family.

“It really hit me how fragile life can be,” Ron shared as he recalled that day.

“Seeing how thankful her family was for the pictures meant everything to me. Three days after the shoot, I was informed that the family mocked up an obituary using one of the photos I had taken. Somehow that hit me hard. That experience is the main reason I keep volunteering to capture these precious moments.”

This was back in 2024. Since then, Ron has gone on to photograph many more wishes, capturing the precious moments behind each one and turning them into lasting memories that our beneficiaries and their families can hold on to.

To fellow photographers who may be considering volunteering, Ron shares:

“If you have the time and the heart for it, I highly encourage you to step forward. Helping to fulfil the last wishes of these patients is an incredibly humbling experience. By simply offering your time and presence, you are giving them and their families a priceless gift.”

Volunteer of the Month for September, Cheryl ❤️

When Cheryl first came across one of our wish stories on Instagram, our mission of fulfilling wishes for terminally ill patients resonated deeply with her. At the same time, she wondered whether she could navigate the emotional weight of the role mindfully for the families involved.

After taking some time to reflect, Cheryl decided to take that first step and joined us in mid-2025. A little over a year later, she has grown into one of our lead wish granters!

As a working mum of three, Cheryl is often asked how she still finds time to volunteer. She warmly replies:

“It’s never about having enough time; it’s about making space for the things that fill your heart. To me, the lives we touch through AWS make it so worthwhile — I willingly choose to make time. I want my children to see giving back as a living practice, and it’s been beautiful seeing my friends inspired to join me on this journey too.”

For Cheryl, fulfilling a wish comes down to three key qualities:

💓Active Listening: Looking beyond the words to understand the emotions behind them, so that patients and families feel truly heard.
🌱Adaptability: As a patient’s condition can change quickly, staying calm and flexible helps create a sense of steadiness for everyone involved.
🧸Teamwork: Every wish is a collective effort. Open and patient communication among volunteers, medical teams and service providers helps everything come together smoothly.

And to anyone considering volunteering with us, Cheryl shares:

“Don’t wait until you feel completely ready. Step forward as you are — the journey will touch your heart just as much as the lives of the families you walk alongside.”

Where Heart and Faith Meet Again

Mdm Teo used to be a familiar face at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, where she joined the chants that brought her peace and wisdom. Although her health had declined and going back to the temple became difficult, Mdm Teo and her family always held onto the wish to go back to the place that had always soothed her heart.

“I still remember that morning — the air was cool after the rain, and everything felt calm and gentle. It was the kind of day that seemed specially blessed,” recalled our AWS volunteer Gary.

As the family gently wheeled Mdm Teo into the Hall of Great Compassion, the familiar rhythm of chanting filled the air. Hearing the chants, Mdm Teo’s eyes glistened with emotion. Although she could not speak nor bow, the devotion from her heart was unwavering. With the support from her daughter, Mdm Teo mustered her strength to put her palms together to pray. As she settled once more into the place that had brought her comfort over the decades, her daughter, son, and grandson took turns to pray on her behalf. Each bow and each chant carried a devotion rooted deeply in the bonds of family and faith.

From there, the family visited the Hall of Great Strength, Bell Tower, the Dining Hall, the Venerable Hong Choon Memorial Museum, and finally the Medicine Buddha Hall; the places filled with memories from Mdm Teo’s younger days.

At every stop, there was a warm sense of nostalgia — a reunion between heart and faith. Mdm Teo smiled often, conveying a sense of peace, comfort, and joy of being back, with her loved ones, at the places that gave her strength over the years.

Their final stop was at her late parents’ home in Ang Mo Kio, where the family offered one last prayer and closed the day with peace, gratitude, and a quiet sense of fulfillment.

“That day reminded me that sometimes, a wish isn’t about going somewhere new. It’s about returning — to a place, to faith, and to the love that feels like home. 圆梦，不只是回到熟悉的地方，更是回到亲情与心安之处。”
