Loss of mobility can have a significant impact on a senior’s independence, confidence and quality of life.
At NTUC Health, Senior Physiotherapist Vivien Lee works with seniors through rehabilitation programmes, helping them improve movement, regain function and rebuild confidence in everyday activities, from getting up from a chair to carrying groceries or reaching for items on a shelf.
“In a hospital, you often only see a snapshot of a patient’s recovery,” Vivien shares. “In community care, the focus shifts to helping seniors adopt and sustain a healthier lifestyle over the long term, so they can continue enjoying the best possible quality of life within their own homes and communities.”
For many seniors, progress comes through small but meaningful improvements over time — becoming steadier on their feet, moving with less hesitation, or managing daily routines with greater confidence.
For Vivien, some of the most meaningful moments happen outside work, when she unexpectedly sees former clients out in the community enjoying life with their families. “Knowing I played a part in helping them stay mobile and independent is incredibly rewarding,” she says.
Behind these outcomes is a wider team supporting seniors throughout their care journey. Therapists, care staff and centre teams work together to encourage participation, monitor progress and create an environment where seniors can continue working towards recovery and independence.
