A game of bingo. A karaoke session. A walk to the nearby shop. A freshly refreshed living space.

Recently, volunteers from digital services provider SPTel Pte Ltd spent the day with residents at our nursing home at Geylang East, bringing energy, companionship and helping hands to a range of activities.

From accompanying residents on Shopxercise outings to facilitating bingo and karaoke sessions, and setting up carnival-style game booths in the living room, volunteers created opportunities for residents to stay engaged, active and connected. They also helped spruce up shared spaces, contributing to a more welcoming environment.

Because sometimes, meaningful impact is found in the simple moments shared together.

Ice-breakers, team challenges, food packing and plenty of conversations across generations.

As part of SP Cares, about 4,500 Singapore Polytechnic students recently spent time with seniors across NTUC Health's Active Ageing Centres, Senior Day Care Centres and Nursing Homes.

Working in teams, students and seniors took part in interactive games like charades and ping pong cups, shared stories about their lives and experiences, and got to know one another through conversations that often stretched beyond the planned activities. Students from the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) also assembled food packs for seniors across participating centres.

For many students, it was their first opportunity to interact closely with older adults outside their own families — gaining a deeper appreciation of ageing and the role community care plays in supporting seniors.

“I realised how much seniors enjoy having someone to talk to and spend time with. It made me appreciate the importance of being present and connecting with others,” shared one student volunteer.

One senior also reflected, “I was very happy talking to the students. They brought a lot of energy and joy.”

Sometimes, meaningful community impact starts with something simple: spending time together.

A little colour can brighten more than just a wall.

Together with volunteers from Buddhist Life Mission, residents of the NTUC Health Nursing Home (Chai Chee) came together for a mural painting session filled with creativity, conversation and shared memories. Guided by the volunteers, residents added their own brushstrokes to the artwork, transforming a once plain space into something vibrant and meaningful.

“I felt very happy painting together with everyone. The wall looks so beautiful now,” shared one resident.

Beyond the mural itself, the session became an opportunity for residents to express themselves, connect with others and create something meaningful together. This is a reflection of NTUC Health’s broader approach to active ageing and community care where we encourage seniors to stay socially connected, express themselves and continue participating in shared experiences within the community.

Knowing what a senior should eat is one thing. Helping families make it work every day is another.

As part of the launch of the new SS 604 Guidelines on Nutrition and Food Services for Older Adults, NTUC Health's Parry Zhang, Senior Manager, Business Development of Senior Day Care, recently represented NTUC Health at Food & Hospitality Asia 2026 and NHG Healthiverse, sharing how community care providers can help bridge the gap between nutritional recommendations and real-life caregiving. As a member of the SS 604 working group, he also contributed to the development of the new guidelines.

“At NTUC Health, we need to translate standards into something applicable and easy to understand for our clients and their families. Our role is to bridge the gap between the modified diets that seniors eat at our day care centres and the food they consume outside.”

At NTUC Health, we work closely with caregivers and families to help them better understand modified diets, food allergies and nutritional needs, so that good nutrition can continue beyond our centres and into everyday life.

Because healthy ageing isn't shaped by a single meal plan. It's built through the everyday choices and support systems that surround seniors at home.

Communities are stronger when everyone has opportunities to contribute, connect and thrive.

At NHG Healthiverse 2026, we saw this come to life through seniors who shared their talents, volunteers who gave their time, and residents who came together to learn more about healthy and active ageing.

Across the two-day event, NTUC Health engaged residents through interactive activities such as adaptive badminton and drone soccer, as well as community outreach and active ageing programmes, while seniors from our centres proudly showcased and sold their own 3D-printed creations. Our very own CEO Choo Kin Poo even joined a panel of experts to share insights on active aging in a panel quiz game show!

We were also delighted to congratulate Mr Tan Kok Chuan from our Active Ageing Centre (Serangoon Central), who received the 15M Community Award for his efforts in bringing residents together through a brisk walking group.

Because ageing well isn't just about care. It's about creating opportunities for seniors to stay engaged, connected and continue contributing to the communities around them.

Stories, memories and shared experiences came together through Between Tides and Ties, an intergenerational initiative by National Museum of Singapore with NTUC Health and My First Skool.

Inspired by the Singapore River and its history, seniors and children explored themes of movement, belonging and connection through storytelling and hands-on making sessions. Across three workshops, they created art to reflect what we carry forward across generations.

But more than an art project, the sessions created opportunities for conversations, shared reflection and meaningful interaction between seniors and children from different generations.

The individual creations will eventually become part of a large-scale installation showcased at the museum — bringing together many shared experiences into one collective artwork.

Loss of mobility can have a significant impact on a senior’s independence, confidence and quality of life.

At NTUC Health, Senior Physiotherapist Vivien Lee works with seniors through rehabilitation programmes, helping them improve movement, regain function and rebuild confidence in everyday activities, from getting up from a chair to carrying groceries or reaching for items on a shelf.

“In a hospital, you often only see a snapshot of a patient’s recovery,” Vivien shares. “In community care, the focus shifts to helping seniors adopt and sustain a healthier lifestyle over the long term, so they can continue enjoying the best possible quality of life within their own homes and communities.”

For many seniors, progress comes through small but meaningful improvements over time — becoming steadier on their feet, moving with less hesitation, or managing daily routines with greater confidence.

For Vivien, some of the most meaningful moments happen outside work, when she unexpectedly sees former clients out in the community enjoying life with their families. “Knowing I played a part in helping them stay mobile and independent is incredibly rewarding,” she says.

Behind these outcomes is a wider team supporting seniors throughout their care journey. Therapists, care staff and centre teams work together to encourage participation, monitor progress and create an environment where seniors can continue working towards recovery and independence.

For many seniors, it’s been years since they last sat in a cinema to catch a movie.

At NTUC Health Active Ageing Centre (Care) (Marsiling Park), that familiar experience came to life again through a screening of 半斤八两, a Cantonese classic that brought back laughter, memories and a sense of shared nostalgia.

The details mattered. Being able to “buy” a ticket, choose a seat, and settle in with familiar snacks — small touches that made the experience feel familiar.

But what stayed with everyone wasn’t just the film. It was the laughter that filled the room, the ease of being surrounded by others, and the simple joy of sharing a moment together.

“It was a joyful atmosphere watching the movie with other seniors, as we all laughed together,” shared Tan Lee Lee, 64. “That’s good for our physical and mental health too.”

At NTUC Health, these moments are part of how we support active ageing: creating spaces where seniors can reconnect, engage and feel a sense of belonging.

At NTUC Health, active ageing is not just about staying active. It is also about creating opportunities for seniors to lead, contribute and uplift those around them.

For active ager Mr Tan Kok Chuan from our Active Ageing Centre (AAC) at Serangoon Central, it started with joining a simple brisk walking group at our AAC. Over time, his quiet encouragement and genuine care for others transformed the activity into a vibrant, senior-led community movement.

Today, Mr Tan organises walking groups for 40 to 50 seniors, plans routes across Singapore, supports slower walkers through buddy systems, and encourages fellow seniors to stay socially and physically engaged — even beyond centre operating hours. Through this close-knit support network, seniors look out for one another and build meaningful friendships.

His efforts have now been recognised through the NHG Health 15M Community Award under the 15M Social Movement.

Mr Tan’s journey is a reminder that when seniors are empowered to take the lead, communities grow stronger, more connected and more caring. 💛
