Our Chairperson, Stefanie Yuen Thio, recently spoke with The Straits Times about her personal experience as an online harms survivor, and the growing threat of deepfakes, image-based sexual abuse, and other forms of digital harm.

Even as Singapore strengthens online protections through the upcoming Online Safety Commission (OSC), it is equally important that victims know a variety of support is available.

At SHECARES, we support individuals affected by online harms through content takedown, trauma informed-counselling, legal clinics, and referrals to relevant services.

Creating safer online spaces requires a whole-of-community effort through stronger safeguards, greater awareness, and accessible support for those affected.

Listen to the podcast at https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/deepfakes-50-intimate-photos-amid-new-digital-regulations and join the conversation on creating safer online spaces for all.

At SHE, we know that legislation alone isn’t enough. A meaningful response to survivors requires holistic, trauma‑informed support, and that’s why our programmes and events matter.

Through initiatives like SHECARES, our Annual Symposium, and community‑driven engagements such as the SHE Dialogues and Project [Unwritten], we are building a safety net that complements the work of the Online Safety Commission.

Responding to digital harms is more than just removing harmful content, it’s about prioritising survivors’ safety and well‑being, and supporting them in navigating their next steps. By leading impactful programmes and convening critical conversations, SHE empowers survivors, raises awareness, and fosters resilience against online harms.

The Online Safety Commission (OSC) will officially begin operations on 29 June 2026. A landmark step in protecting Singaporeans from online harms. We here at SHE welcome this new pathway of accountability for victims to seek timely redress. Through the SHECARES Centre, Singapore’s first dedicated support hub for survivors of online harms, we stand ready to complement OSC’s work by providing trauma-informed care and community support.

Perpetrators of harassment, doxxing, and intimate image abuse will face clear consequences under statutory torts, while platforms and administrators across the ecosystem are called to step up. Together, we can build safer digital spaces where trust and dignity thrive.

We are excited to see Ministry of Law, Singapore and Institute of Policy Studies - IPS convene the Youth Forum, bringing critical conversations on law, governance, and society to the forefront.

One key discussion will dive into online harms, freedom of speech, and digital citizenship which will examine how our increasingly connected world creates both opportunity and risk, especially for youths navigating complex digital spaces.

Ms Natalie Chia, Director of Research at SG Her Empowerment (SHE) will be contributing as a speaker in this space where she will share valuable insights on online harms, digital safety, and the lived experiences of individuals affected by these issues. Her involvement underscores the importance of multidisciplinary voices in shaping policies that are not only robust, but also empathetic and forward-looking.

Joining her in the discussion moderated by Mr Dev Bahl, Product Director from MAGES Studio Pte Ltd will be Ms Vanessa Yeo, Strategic Policy & Operations Cluster Director from IMDA and Mr Joshua Jeyaraj, Southeast Asia (Regulatory & International Legal) Principal Counsel from Roblox Corporation.

Looking forward to the perspectives shared on how laws, stakeholders, and individuals can work together to build a safer, more accountable digital environment for the next generation.

The Grok scandal highlights a critical truth: AI safety is a design choice. Without guardrails, platforms risk normalising sexualised deepfakes that overwhelmingly target women. Regulation, responsibility, and shared standards are non-negotiable. We can and must do better.✊

🚨The 1st SHE Dialogue of 2026 🎙️

Hosted by SHE Chairperson Ms Stefanie Yuen Thio, this closed-door conversation with Minister of State Ms Jasmine Lau centred on a deceptively simple, but pressing question: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺?

💡 Key Takeaways from the dialogue:
🔹 Competitiveness must go hand-in-hand with kindness, empathy & resilience.
🔹 Education in the age of increased global competition is less about rote learning, and more about adaptability and critical thinking.
🔹 Parents play a critical role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow — not by controlling the conversation, but by participating in it.
🔹Resilience in the young is developed through life experiences, not simply engineered through formal education settings.

📢 These conversations remind us that shaping the future is a shared responsibility, one that calls on leaders, parents, and citizens alike to build a society that is both strong and compassionate.
