Second year at the Inclusive Careers Fair today! Had a good listen at the panel on inclusion, and met folks from Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels, Airbnb, Apple and Singapore Fashion Council at their booths. Early conversations but every conversation counts. Grateful for days like this, they remind me why The Story School exists, to help our students build real creative skills and a path forward. 📸✨

I did it. 🎉

Last Saturday (13 June 2026), The Story School ran its very first photography lesson with the wonderful folks at Extra•Ordinary People

Youth with special needs. Smartphones in hand. Photos up on the big screen for everyone to see.

The energy in that room was something I cannot describe it. Every photo shared was applauded. Every student had a moment.

This is just the beginning. Lesson 2 is next and that is where the magic really happens.

A primary school teacher described it this way:

"Learning common strategies to cater to SEN pupils does not solve all problems. Because five kids with ADHD all behave differently."

She's right. And she has been teaching for over 20 years.

I think about teachers like her often. They show up every day to classrooms that are increasingly complex, with tools that were designed for a different time, and a responsibility that no training manual fully prepares you for.

They do it anyway.

At The Story School, we are not trying to fix classrooms. That is not our lane.

What we are trying to do is make sure that when a student with special needs reaches the end of their school journey, whether that is in a SPED school or a mainstream one, there is somewhere real to go next.

A programme that takes their creativity seriously. A portfolio they can be proud of. An employer who has been prepared to receive them.

Teachers carry so much. The least we can do is build a strong landing for the students they've worked so hard to prepare.

MOE recently released data on school transitions for the first time.

Here's what it says:
— About 8,900 students are currently in SPED schools in Singapore
— The total number of students with special needs grew 6% between 2023 and 2025
— An average of 200 students transfer from mainstream to SPED schools every year — 70% of those students have intellectual disabilities

Important numbers. But there is one number that is missing.

How many of those 8,900 students will find meaningful employment in the creative industries when they graduate?

We don't know. Because it has not happened at scale yet.

That is not a gap in the data. That is a gap in the system.

At The Story School, we are building the pathway that makes that number exist.

"You feel shameful."

That line stopped me.

It came from a mother in Singapore who was told her son needed to move from a mainstream school to a SPED school. She described the moment as fearful and overwhelming and the stigma that came with it as something hard to even talk about.

I read her words and thought, this is exactly why we do what we do.

Because the stigma does not end when school starts. It does not end when a child finds the right school. It follows families for years, into decisions about jobs, about futures, about what kind of life is even possible.

At The Story School, we start from a different place.

We start from the belief that a young person who has found their footing, who has found a school that sees them, deserves a future that sees them too.

My son never thought he was good at anything.

That is what one mum told me recently and I have heard it more times than I can count. Not because her son is not capable but because no one had ever given him the right opportunity to show what he could do.

That is exactly why I created I Made This, a 2-session Mobile Phone Photography programme for youth with special needs, aged 13 to 18.

No expensive equipment. No prior experience needed. Just a phone, a safe space, and a facilitator who genuinely believes every young person has a story worth telling.

By the end of the programme, every student will have:
📸 Taken their own photographs with confidence
🖼️ Created a photo story
🎉 Presented their work to their teacher/s and fellow classmates

Time really fly when one is busy. 3 months just teleported like Star Trek and now i am happy to say i graduated from the Cohort 14 of Singapore University of Social Sciences Venture Builder Programme.

Honestly it not easy for me. Believe it or not, i felt inferior, throughout this 3 months, i sat among giants, experienced business founders. While i joined that programme wanting to learn how can i scale my Groundup initiative by the name of The Story School so i can provide a holistic solution for the special needs youth in term of education and employment.
