When the 8 of us first came together to support the public rental community in Singapore, we had small goals. We thought we would have done our part if we could support a couple of rental neighbourhoods in Singapore, and set ourselves a goal of S$60,000, a goal that we thought was a stretch. We put down S$12k of our own money, and told ourselves that S$48k more could be possible.
The folks from Bringing Love to Every Single Soul brought their finance infrastructure and their love of their communities. The folks from I Am Talented (IAT) brought their tech skills and their belief in leaving no one behind. Together with a few other friends, we started making baby steps towards our goal, fundraising, while at the same time onboarding new beneficiaries. We did not know what was next in store for us, but we knew families needed our help, and babies needed their milk powder and diapers, and we figured our way forward, one step at a time.
We had to make decisions that left us struggling to sleep at night. We were after all, your next door neighbours, civil servants, finance execs, interns, software engineers, and students, trying to navigate our path in this uncharted territory.
When we first exceeded S$60k, we did not at that point in time have enough families to support. Some members of the team were struggling with holding on to the money the public entrusted us with without knowing if we’ll even find families to spend it on. Others who were working with the various agencies were pushing back very hard, because they knew that once our partners sent over the names, we won’t have enough to support all of them. We had quite a few discussions and meetings debating our path forward.
Today, we are struggling to sleep for a very different reason. Today, because of all of your support and trust, we have far exceeded our original goal of S$60k. We are currently at more than S$90k, and are supporting more than 1500 individuals across more than 250 households. We are supporting households across Singapore, North, South, East, West and Central. The requests for support coming in, is far outpacing the money that we are raising. We are getting messages from hospital staff asking to refer their patients, to families reaching out seeking for assistance directly. And now we are having to make the difficult decision of prioritising the cases based on needs.
To support most of the families that have been referred to us in the past 2 week, we need to raise another S$60k more. This is not a small amount. And we are we not expecting our donors to keep donating again and again.
To those who have gotten us this far, we thank you. We could not have gotten here without you, and we are forever grateful for your support. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen groups starting to fundraising for us as well. Fitness and Yoga classes promising to forward the fees they collected for their classes to us. We saw social workers whose cases we onboarded just weeks ago, calling on their friends to raise funds on our behalf, because they understand the urgency of what we are doing.
We are no longer doing this alone.
Today, Project Stable Staples is no longer the project that 8 youths came together to start at the end of March.
Today, Project Stable Staples is our movement. Ordinary people from all walks of life trying to make sense of this situation.
